Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4112

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sabrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: During the expedition of Tabuk we camped at al-Hijr, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever has prepared food with this (well's) water should throw it away." The narrator says: Some of them had kneaded dough and some had made hays (a mixture of dates, ghee and dried curd), so they threw it away.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it; however, both of them (Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim) agreed on the hadith of Juwayriyah bin Asma', from Nafi', from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), that the people camped with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at al-Hijr of Thamud, but its wording is different.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (authentic due to supporting evidence). And this chain is "hasan" because of 'Abd al-'Aziz bin al-Rabi', since he is "saduq" (truthful) and hasan al-hadith.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (6551), and by his way Ibn Hajar in "Taghliq al-Ta'liq" 4/ 19, by way of Sabrah bin 'Abd al-'Aziz bin al-Rabi' bin Sabrah. Al-Tabarani (6552) and Ibn Hajar (4/ 19) also narrated it by way of 'Uthman bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Tara'ifi. Both of them narrate it from 'Abd al-'Aziz bin al-Rabi', with this chain.
Note: In the printed edition of al-Tabarani, part of the first chain has dropped out, which can be restored from "Taghliq al-Ta'liq".
Reference / Source: Al-Tahawi narrated it in "Sharh Mushkil al-Athar" (3752) by way of Ibrahim bin Sabrah (bin 'Abd al-'Aziz bin al-Rabi'), and al-Tabarani (6550) by way of al-Humaydi. Both narrate it from Harmalah bin 'Abd al-'Aziz, from his father, from his grandfather.
Technical note: Both of them dropped a narrator from the chain, while what is correct is to mention him, as in the narration of the others.
Note / Clarification: This narration will come later under no. (7331) by way of Muhammad bin 'Abdullah bin 'Abd al-Hakam (from Harmalah, from his father, from his grandfather, from his father Sabrah bin Ma'bad).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This hadith is supported (as a shahid) by the hadith of 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), which the author (al-Hakim) will soon point to.
Note / Clarification (language): "Al-Hays" is a food made by mixing dates, dried curd (aqit) and clarified butter. Sometimes flour or crumbled bread is used in place of the dried curd.

Correction and analysis: Rather, al-Bukhari and Muslim both agreed on narrating it from the hadith of 'Ubaydullah bin 'Umar, from Nafi', from Ibn 'Umar (al-Bukhari 3379, Muslim 2981). It is also in al-Bukhari (3378) by way of 'Abdullah bin Dinar, from Ibn 'Umar.
Technical note / Error (wahm): As for the hadith of "Juwayriyah bin Asma' from Nafi'" (mentioned by the author), we have not found it. Our strong assumption is that the author made a "mistake" (wahm) here; in fact this narration is that of "Sakhr bin Juwayriyah from Nafi'", and by this route it is in Ahmad 10/ (5984) and Ibn Hibban (6203).
