Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This report is sahih, and this chain is "hasan" because of Yahya bin al-Yaman, but he has been "corroborated" (mutaba'). It has been narrated from Ibn 'Abbas through several routes.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sufyan is "al-Thawri", and Bayan is "Ibn Bishr al-Ahmasi".
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Khaythamah narrated it in his "Tarikh" (as in Ibn Nasir al-Din's "Jami' al-Athar" 2/21) from Yahya bin Ma'in, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari narrated it in his "Tafsir" (23/83) and "Tarikh" (1/267) via Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan, from Sufyan al-Thawri, likewise.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari also narrated it in "al-Tafsir" (23/83) and "al-Tarikh" (1/268) via Dawud bin Abi Hind, from al-Sha'bi, likewise.
Note / Clarification: It will come at number (4082) via Shu'bah, from Bayan, and at (4081) via 'Ata', from Ibn 'Abbas, and it has already appeared at (3654) via Mujahid, from Ibn 'Abbas.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The contrary will also come from Ibn 'Abbas, that the one to be sacrificed (al-dhabih) was "Ishaq (peace be upon him)" (see narrations 4090, 4090 M and 4092).
Analysis: But Ibn Kathir said in his "Tafsir" (7/24): The more apparent view from Ibn 'Abbas is that he was Isma'il. Likewise Ibn Hajar said in "al-Fath" (22/420): The better known of the two narrations from Ibn 'Abbas is that the one to be sacrificed was "Isma'il (peace be upon him)".
Note / Clarification: See the full discussion of this disagreement from Ibn 'Abbas at number (4090 M) below.
Note / Clarification: And see the definitive treatment of the question of which of the two was the one to be sacrificed after narration (4092 M).
