It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "When Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was commanded to build the House of Allah, Sayyiduna Isma'il and Sayyidah Hajar (peace be upon them both) set out with him. When he arrived in Makkah, he saw above his head, at the site of the House, something like a cloud-like shade in which there was something like a head. It spoke to him and said: 'O Ibrahim, build upon my shade (or according to my measure), and do not add to it or reduce from it.' So when he had built it, he left from there and left Isma'il and Hajar (peace be upon them both) behind. And this refers to the time when Allah Almighty said: 'And when We designated for Ibrahim the site of the House, (saying): Do not associate anything with Me, and purify My House for those who circle it, and those who stand, and those who bow and prostrate' [Surah al-Hajj: 26]."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs, but they did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is da'if (weak). The narrator Mu'ammal bin Isma'il had "poor memory". Technical note / Defect ('illah): Mu'ammal is alone in inserting the story of the building of the House (the Ka'bah) in the sequence mentioned here. He was contradicted by others who narrated the story of Ibrahim and Hajar from Harithah bin Mudarrib, from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), such as Isra'il from his grandfather Abu Ishaq (see Ibn 'Abd al-Hakam's "Futuh Misr" p. 65) and Yunus bin Abi Ishaq directly from Harithah bin Mudarrib (see al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi's "Nawadir al-Usul" 1375). They did not mention that the building of the House took place when Ibrahim first took Isma'il and Hajar to the site of the House, as Mu'ammal related it here. Details of the narration: Rather, the context of the story in the narration of Ibn 'Abbas in Sahih al-Bukhari (3365) indicates that the building of the House came well after Ibrahim had left his son Isma'il and his mother Hajar at the site of the House, and that the House was built after Isma'il had grown up and married, and that the two of them (father and son) built it together. This is what agrees with the text of the Qur'an. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Moreover, it has been narrated from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) himself, in what appeared earlier at numbers (1702) and (3192) via Khalid bin 'Ar'arah, what indicates that Ibrahim and Isma'il (peace be upon them) built the House together. This agrees with the narration of Ibn 'Abbas and contradicts this narration of Mu'ammal.
