Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4066

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) circumcised himself at the age of one hundred and twenty years with al-Qadum (the name of a place or a tool), and when he (peace be upon him) passed away he was two hundred years old.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This narration, with this particular wording, is sahih as "mawquf" on Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this narration Yazid bin Harun was contradicted by another man far below him in trustworthiness and eminence; indeed a number of scholars abandoned his hadith. He is "Abu Qatadah 'Abdullah bin Qatadah al-Harrani". He narrated it from Hammad bin Salamah as "marfu'" (as a saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him), so his contradiction carries no weight.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A whole group agreed with Hammad bin Salamah in narrating it as mawquf; al-Daraqutni mentioned them in "al-'Ilal" (1352). Among them: Abu Mu'awiyah al-Darir (as in the following narration), Malik, Hammad bin Zayd, Mu'awiyah bin Salih, Ibn 'Uyaynah, 'Isa bin Yunus, Yahya al-Qattan, 'Abdah bin Sulayman, Jarir bin 'Abd al-Hamid, Ja'far bin 'Awn, 'Ikrimah bin Ibrahim and 'Ali bin Mushir (in one narration from him). They narrated it from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyab, as "mawquf".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Another group contradicted them and narrated it from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari as "marfu'". Among them al-Daraqutni mentioned al-Awza'i, Muhammad bin Ishaq and Ibn Jurayj (in the narration of Abu Qurrah Musa bin Tariq from him), as well as Malik and al-Layth (in a narration from Ibn Wahb from both of them). He then mentioned that others besides Musa bin Tariq narrated it from Ibn Jurayj and mentioned a man between him and Yahya bin Sa'id, namely "Ibrahim bin Muhammad al-Aslami".
Status of the narrator: We say: He (Ibrahim bin Muhammad) is "matruk al-hadith" (abandoned in hadith).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is another disagreement over it from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari, namely that some narrate it from him from Sa'id bin al-Musayyab as "maqtu'" (as his own statement). This was narrated from Malik, 'Isa bin Yunus, Ibn 'Uyaynah and Ma'mar bin Rashid.
Details of the narration: Among those who narrated it as "marfu'" is also al-Layth bin Sa'd, from Muhammad bin 'Ajlan, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But Yahya al-Qattan contradicted al-Layth in its wording, and this is an error by those below al-Layth, as will be explained. So the more likely view is that, with the wording mentioned, it is "mawquf", from the narration of Sa'id bin al-Musayyab from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sa'id bin al-Musayyab was contradicted by other students of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), such as al-A'raj and Abu Salamah. Both of them narrated it from Abu Hurayrah as marfu' with the wording: "Ibrahim (peace be upon him) circumcised himself when he was eighty." Likewise 'Ajlan, the freed slave of Fatimah, narrated it from Abu Hurayrah (in the narration of Yahya al-Qattan from Muhammad bin 'Ajlan, from his father).
Important point: So this (the eighty years) is what is preserved (mahfuz) in the wording of the marfu' version, and what is preserved in the wording of the mawquf version is what Sa'id bin al-Musayyab narrated from Abu Hurayrah, as Ibn 'Abd al-Barr indicated in "al-Tamhid" (23/140).
General principle: We say: When the two conflict, what is in the "marfu'" version takes precedence, and that is why the authors of the two Sahihs (al-Bukhari and Muslim) confined themselves to it. Perhaps Abu Hurayrah took the mawquf version only from the scholars of the People of the Book with whom he used to sit, such as 'Abdullah bin Salam and Ka'b al-Ahbar. And Allah knows best.
Reference / Source: Ibn 'Adi narrated it in "al-Kamil" (4/194), and via him al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (8272), via Abu Qatadah 'Abdullah bin Waqid al-Harrani, from Hammad bin Salamah, with this same chain, as "marfu'".
Status of the narrator: Ibn Waqid is not reliable, and he is neither equal to Yazid bin Harun nor anywhere near him.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd narrated it in "al-Tabaqat" (1/30) from Ma'n bin 'Isa al-Qazzaz, from Malik bin Anas; Ibn Abi Shaybah (9/58, 13/61) from 'Abdah bin Sulayman; al-Bukhari in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (1250) via Hammad bin Zayd; al-Hasan bin 'Ali bin 'Affan in "al-Amali wa al-Qira'ah" (p. 24), Abu 'Arubah al-Harrani in "al-Awa'il" (24), al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (8271) and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (6/199) via Ja'far bin 'Awn; Muhammad bin Nasr al-Marwazi (as in Ibn 'Abd al-Barr's "al-Tamhid" 23/139, and perhaps it is in his large book on the disagreement of the scholars) via Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan; and Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "al-'Iyal" (580) and Muhammad bin Nasr al-Marwazi (as in "al-Tamhid") via 'Ali bin Mushir.
Details of the narration: All of these narrate it from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari, with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: It will come next, likewise, from Abu Mu'awiyah Muhammad bin Khazim al-Darir, from Yahya bin Sa'id, as "mawquf".
Reference / Source: Muhammad bin Nasr al-Marwazi narrated it (as in "al-Tamhid" 23/138), Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (6/198) and in "Tabyin al-Imtinan bi al-Amr bi al-Khitan" (17), Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-Muntazam" (1/276-277) and Abu al-Qasim al-Rafi'i in "Tarikh Qazwin" (2/43) via Abu 'Amr al-Awza'i; and Ibn Hibban (6204) via Abu Qurrah Musa bin Tariq, from Ibn Jurayj. Both of them (al-Awza'i and Ibn Jurayj) narrate it from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari as "marfu'".
Reference / Source: Ma'mar bin Rashid narrated it in "al-Jami'" (20245), and Malik in "al-Muwatta'" (in the recension of Abu Mus'ab al-Zuhri, 1929), from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyab as his own statement (i.e., maqtu'), without mentioning Abu Hurayrah.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (6205) narrated it via Qutaybah bin Sa'id, from al-Layth bin Sa'd, from Muhammad bin 'Ajlan, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), as "marfu'".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Yahya al-Qattan contradicted al-Layth bin Sa'd in its wording (see Ahmad 15/9622), for he narrated it from Muhammad bin 'Ajlan, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), as "marfu'", with the wording: "Ibrahim (peace be upon him) circumcised himself when he was eighty."
Preferred view: The narration of Yahya al-Qattan is weightier, because it agrees with the narrations of others besides Sa'id bin al-Musayyab from Abu Hurayrah, as will be mentioned.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Imam Ahmad (14/8281, 15/9408), al-Bukhari (3356, 6298) and Muslim (2370) narrated it via Abu al-Zinad, from al-A'raj, from Abu Hurayrah, as "marfu'": "Ibrahim (peace be upon him) circumcised himself when he was eighty years old." So this agrees with the narration of Yahya al-Qattan from Ibn 'Ajlan, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Al-Bazzar (7839), Abu Ya'la (5981) and Ibn 'Asakir (6/201) narrated it via Muhammad bin 'Amr bin 'Alqamah, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah, as "marfu'", with wording like the narration of al-A'raj and 'Ajlan from Abu Hurayrah.
