Grading: This hadith is "sahih", and Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi is "corroborated" (mutaba').
Note / Clarification: Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi is the author of "al-Mubtada' wa al-Maghazi", and he has been criticised. The most balanced view about him is what al-Dhahabi said in "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'" (9/469), that he is needed in the military campaigns and history. He said: In my assessment, despite his weakness his hadith is written down and narrated, because I do not accuse him of fabrication, and the statement of whoever discarded him entirely is excessive in some respects. He also said (9/454-455): He gathered and gathered thoroughly, but mixed the lean with the fat, and beads with precious stones, so they discarded him for that; yet despite this he cannot be dispensed with in the campaigns and in the days and reports of the Companions.
Note / Clarification: Al-Hakim stated explicitly at the beginning of the book "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" that this is his method in what he narrates from al-Waqidi. He said: As for the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhari and Muslim), they did not go beyond the virtues; we have begun, at the start of the mention of each Companion, with knowledge of his lineage and death, then with those of his virtues which are sound according to their condition but which they did not record. So I could not dispense with mentioning Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi and his peers in this knowledge.
Note / Clarification: Al-Hakim does not deny that there are some oddities in al-Waqidi's books, and for this reason he said after report (4136): I have abridged from the reports about Yusuf (peace be upon him) only those whose chain is sound; had I gone into the oddities of Wahb bin Munabbih and Abu 'Abdullah al-Waqidi, the chapter would have become very long.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We say: Al-Husayn bin al-Faraj (known as Ibn al-Khayyat) is also criticised, and the most balanced view about him is that he is "not strong", as Abu al-Shaykh al-Asbahani described him. He carried "al-Mubtada' wa al-Maghazi" from al-Waqidi; al-Hasan bin al-Jahm al-Taymi took it from him, and the people of Isfahan took it from al-Hasan al-Taymi. Al-Dhahabi mentioned that others besides Ibn Ma'in considered him acceptable. We say: That is in view of his being the transmitter of al-Waqidi who took some of his books from him. Among those who considered him acceptable is Ibn Mandah, since he quoted him in "Fath al-Bab fi al-Kuna wa al-Alqab"; likewise Abu Nu'aym, since he quoted him frequently in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" and elsewhere; and the author (al-Hakim) also, since he narrated much of what he transmits from al-Waqidi through his narration; indeed, he narrated nothing from al-Waqidi in the reports and on the Companions except through him.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): As for al-Hasan bin al-Jahm al-Taymi, a group of the people of Isfahan narrated from him and he has not been disparaged in any way. Indeed, Abu al-Shaykh said in "Tabaqat al-Muhaddithin bi-Asbahan" (3/390): I lived in his time and resolved more than once to go to him, but it did not come about. The author will transmit more than 140 narrations from al-Waqidi with this chain, and in all of them, Allah willing, we will confine ourselves to grading those above al-Waqidi, because al-Waqidi's book is well known through this route to him, while pointing out when he is alone in narrating something. And we ask Allah the Exalted for success and right guidance.
Grading: The remaining narrators of the chain are unobjectionable, because a group narrated from Ibrahim bin Muhammad bin Ziyad (al-Alhani) and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat". This report has also been narrated from 'Abdullah bin Busr through two other "hasan" routes.

Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Al-Waqidi's statement is supported by the hadith of Abu Umamah that appeared earlier at number (3076) and the report of Ibn 'Abbas that appeared earlier at number (4053), and both of their chains are "sahih".
