Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4050

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn and Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The sons of Nuh (peace be upon him) were three: Sam, Ham, and Yafith, who is the father (forefather) of the Romans."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (Z) and (S) and the printed edition it reads "from Samurah" (without the "and"), which is a clear "mistake", because al-Hasan al-Basri narrates it from both 'Imran bin Husayn and Samurah bin Jundab, not that 'Imran heard it from Samurah. This mistake is confirmed by the fact that Abu Bakr bin Abi Khaythamah narrated it in his "Tarikh" (as in Ibn Nasir al-Din's "Jami' al-Athar" 2/153-154) and al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (18/309) via 'Ayyash bin al-Walid al-Raqqam, and both say: "from 'Imran bin Husayn and from Samurah". Likewise more than one narrator narrated it from Sa'id (Ibn Abi 'Arubah) via al-Hasan from Samurah alone, and Shayban al-Nahwi narrated it from Qatadah mentioning Samurah alone, which proves that the dropping of the "and" here is certainly an error.

Grading: Its chain is "sahih", and al-Hasan al-Basri's hearing from Samurah is sound, as we explained at number (151). As for 'Imran, the majority hold that he did not hear from him, though the author (al-Hakim) has stated decisively in several places in this book that he heard from him. Al-Tirmidhi, and al-'Iraqi in "Mahajjat al-Qurab" (8), declared it hasan.
Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it (33/20099) from 'Abd al-Wahhab bin 'Ata' and (20114) from Rawh bin 'Ubadah, and al-Tirmidhi (3231, 3931) via Yazid bin Zuray'; all three from Sa'id bin Abi 'Arubah, with this same chain, mentioning Samurah alone.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (20100) narrated it via Shayban al-Nahwi, from Qatadah, likewise, also mentioning Samurah alone.
