Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4038

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: "The first place Allah Almighty sent Adam (peace be upon him) down to was the land of India."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Grading: This report is "sahih", and it is "mawquf" (stopping at the Companion). The narrators of this chain are unobjectionable, but we have not been able to establish when 'Imran bin 'Uyaynah heard from 'Ata' bin al-Sa'ib: was it before his memory deteriorated (ikhtilat) or after? Jarir bin 'Abd al-Hamid corroborated him on its chain but differed from him in its text (as will come), and Jarir is among those who heard from 'Ata' during his deterioration. However, this report of Ibn 'Abbas has been narrated through another route that agrees with the narration of 'Imran bin 'Uyaynah, so his version is the one to be relied on. And Allah knows best.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari narrated it in his "Tafsir" (9/111) and his "Tarikh" (1/121) from 'Amr bin 'Ali, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Hatim narrated it in his "Tafsir" (1/88) via Muhammad bin Abi Bakr al-Muqaddami, from 'Imran bin 'Uyaynah, likewise.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Hatim also narrated it (1/89) via Jarir bin 'Abd al-Hamid, from 'Ata' bin al-Sa'ib, likewise.
Note / Clarification: With the wording: "Adam was sent down to a land called Dajna, between Makkah and al-Ta'if." This is how Jarir said it, "between Makkah and al-Ta'if", and it is a "mistake".
Reference / Source: For al-Tabari narrated it in his "Tarikh" (1/122, 125, 133) and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (7/422) via Abu Yahya al-Qattat, from Mujahid, from Ibn 'Abbas: "When Adam came down, he came down in India." Abu Yahya al-Qattat has some "weakness", but he is taken into consideration in corroborating chains and supporting reports.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported by what Abu al-Zubayr narrated from Jabir, who said: "When Adam (peace be upon him) was sent down to the earth, he was sent down in India." Ibn Mandah narrated it in "al-Tawhid" (85), Abu Ya'la al-Farra' in "Ibtal al-Ta'wilat" (71) and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (7/438). Ibn Mandah declared its chain "sahih".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is also authentically established from 'Ali bin Abi Talib, as will come after it.
Note / Clarification: Al-Tabari said in his "Tarikh" (1/122): "Adam's descent in the land of India is something whose soundness is not rejected by the scholars of Islam nor by the people of the Torah and the Gospel."
