Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4031

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that the polytheists said: "O Muhammad, describe to us the lineage of your Lord." So Allah Almighty revealed this surah: "Say: He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Self-Sufficient (al-Samad). He neither begets nor is born, and there is none comparable to Him" [Surah al-Ikhlas: 1-4], because everything that is born will certainly die, and everything that dies is inherited from, whereas Allah Almighty neither dies nor is inherited from. "And there is none comparable to Him" means: there is none resembling Him or equal to Him, and there is nothing like Him.
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: It is like this in the manuscripts other than (Z), which has "al-suwar", in the plural. The virtues of Surat al-Ikhlas have already been mentioned in "Fada'il al-Qur'an" at numbers (2103, 2105, 2109), and the last place also contains the virtue of al-Mu'awwidhatayn. Their virtue is also in hadith number (2110).

Note / Clarification: The manuscripts have "Muhammad bin Ali"; this is a slip of the pen by the author (al-Hakim) or by some later copyists. Al-Bayhaqi recorded this hadith in "al-Shu'ab" (100) and "al-Asma' wa al-Sifat" (50) from the author and gave the correct name: "Abu Ja'far Muhammad bin Salih" (adding "bin Hani'" in "al-Asma' wa al-Sifat"). One of the author's shaykhs is Abu Ja'far Muhammad bin Ali bin Duhaym al-Shaybani, but no narration of his from al-Husayn bin al-Fadl al-Bajali is known, whereas the author has narrated dozens of hadiths in this book from al-Husayn via Abu Ja'far Muhammad bin Salih bin Hani'.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): What is preserved (mahfuz) in this report is that it is the tafsir of Abu al-'Aliyah (Rufay' al-Riyahi), without Ubayy bin Ka'b in it (as will come). The chain up to him is hasan, in sha' Allah, on account of Abu Ja'far al-Razi ('Isa bin Abi 'Isa). Al-Husayn bin al-Fadl is Abu Ali al-Bajali al-Kufi, then al-Naysaburi, and Muhammad bin Sabiq is Muhammad bin Sa'id bin Sabiq.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (35/21219) and al-Tirmidhi (3364) recorded it via Abu Sa'd Muhammad bin Muyassar al-Saghani, from Abu Ja'far al-Razi, with this chain. Muhammad bin Muyassar is da'if, but he has been corroborated.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ubaydullah bin Musa (in al-Tirmidhi 3365), Mihran bin Abi Umar al-'Attar (in al-Tabari's "Tafsir" 1/343) and Hashim bin al-Qasim (in al-'Uqayli's "al-Du'afa'" after 1654). All three narrate it from Abu Ja'far al-Razi, from al-Rabi', from Abu al-'Aliyah similarly, without mentioning Ubayy bin Ka'b. Al-Tirmidhi and al-'Uqayli considered this correct, because these three are trustworthy (Mihran being the lowest of them in reliability).
