Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is da'if. Ya'qub bin Muhammad al-Zuhri has some weakness, but he has been corroborated. As for Ibrahim bin Muhammad bin Thabit, Ibn Abi Hatim quoted his father in "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" (2/125) as saying that he is saduq, while Ibn 'Adi said in "al-Kamil" (1/262): Munkar reports have been narrated from him. He has also been contradicted (as will come). Al-Dhahabi declared it defective in his "Talkhis" on account of both of them and said: "Ya'qub is weak, and Ibrahim is a narrator of munkar reports, and this is the most munkar of them." 'Uthman bin Abdullah bin Abi 'Atiq had two narrators from him, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat", but he is majhul al-hal. Likewise we have not found a biography of 'Amr bin Ja'dah (the father of Sa'id). Al-'Iraqi said in "Mahajjat al-Qurab ila Mahabbat al-'Arab" (130): "I have not found any criticism or praise of him"; despite that, he graded it hasan and cited the hadith of al-Zubayr, which comes later, as a supporting report for it.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "al-Khilafiyyat" (as in "Tafsir Ibn Kathir" 8/512, who considered it strange) from Abu Abdullah al-Hakim, with this chain. Al-Bukhari recorded it in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (1/321), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (24/994), Ibn 'Adi in "al-Kamil" (1/262), al-Ajurri in "al-Shari'ah" (1766), al-Tha'labi in his "Tafsir" (10/299), al-Bayhaqi in "Manaqib al-Shafi'i" (1/34-35) and al-Wahidi in "Asbab al-Nuzul" (870) via Abu Mus'ab al-Zuhri, from Ibrahim bin Muhammad bin Thabit, with the same chain.
Reference / Source: It will come at number (7051) via Abu Mus'ab and Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Raddad.
Note / Clarification: Al-Bukhari, after citing the hadith in abridged form in his "Tarikh", said: Al-Uwaysi (that is, Abd al-Aziz bin Abdullah) said to me: Sulayman (that is, Ibn Bilal) narrated to me from 'Uthman bin Abdullah bin Abi 'Atiq, from Ibn Ja'dah al-Makhzumi, from Ibn Shihab, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) something similar. Then Abu Abdullah al-Bukhari said: "This is more likely to be mursal."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We say: The mursal reports of Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri are weak according to the majority and are worth nothing.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported by the hadith of al-Zubayr bin al-'Awwam, except that it mentions the caliphate in place of his words "anni fihim" (that I am among them). Al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Awsat" (9173), Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (447), al-Bayhaqi in "Manaqib al-Shafi'i" (1/33-35) and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (64/15), via Abdullah bin Mus'ab bin Thabit al-Zubayri, from Hisham bin 'Urwah, from his father, from al-Zubayr bin al-'Awwam as marfu'. In its chain is Abdullah bin Mus'ab, who was a chief and an amir; Abu Hatim al-Razi said about him: "He is a shaykh of the same level as Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad." Ibn Ma'in declared him weak (as in "Tarikh Baghdad" 11/419) and said: "He was weak in hadith; he had no book, he only narrated from memory." We say: Perhaps he erred in making it a hadith of the family of al-Zubayr.
Reference / Source: Likewise, with mention of the caliphate in place of prophethood, it was narrated from 'Utaybah bint Abd al-Malik bin Yahya, from al-Zuhri, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyab, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as mursal. Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi recorded it in his "Tarikh" (8/94-95), and via him Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-'Ilal al-Mutanahiyah" (477). In its chain up to 'Utaybah there are unknown narrators, and about 'Utaybah al-Dhahabi said in "Mizan al-I'tidal": "An unknown woman who narrated a false report from al-Zuhri." Ibn al-Jawzi said: "This hadith is not authentic from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)."
