Mutarrif bin Abdullah bin al-Shikhkhir (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father that he said: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was reciting "Competition in increase diverts you" [Surah al-Takathur], and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying: "The son of Adam says: My wealth, my wealth! Yet what is yours of your wealth except what you ate and consumed, or wore and wore out, or gave in charity and sent ahead?"
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but it is not on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), because Abdullah bin al-Shikhkhir has no narrator other than his son Mutarrif. However, when I looked into it, I found that Imam Muslim recorded it in abridged form from the hadith of Shu'bah, narrated from Qatadah.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The hadith is sahih, and this chain is hasan on account of Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad al-Harithi, and he has been corroborated. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Hisham is Ibn Abi Abdullah al-Dastuwa'i. Reference / Source: Muslim (2958) recorded it from Muhammad bin al-Muthanna, from Mu'adh bin Hisham, with this chain. So al-Hakim's including it in al-Mustadrak and his remarks after it are an oversight on his part. Reference / Source: Ahmad (26/16305) and Ibn Hibban (3327) recorded it via two routes from Hisham al-Dastuwa'i, with the same chain. Reference / Source: Ahmad (26/16306, 16322, 16324), Muslim (2958), al-Tirmidhi (2342, 3354), al-Nasa'i (6407, 11632) and Ibn Hibban (701) recorded it via various routes from Qatadah, with the same chain. Reference / Source: It will come with the author at number (8111) via Hammam from Qatadah. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is a report from Abu Hurayrah in Muslim (2959), but without mention of the recitation. (6711). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Likewise from Qays bin 'Asim al-Minqari, which will come with the author at number (6711).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Rather, Muslim recorded it in full from the hadith of Shu'bah and others from Qatadah, like the author's narration. Technical note / Defect ('illah): As for his statement that "Abdullah bin al-Shikhkhir has no narrator other than his son Mutarrif", this is an oversight, since his two other sons, Yazid and Hani', also narrated from him. Yazid's narration from him is in Muslim and al-Nasa'i, and Hani''s narration is in al-Nasa'i. (97). Technical note / Defect ('illah): As for his claim that it does not meet the condition of the two Shaykhs because Abdullah bin al-Shikhkhir has only one narrator, this issue has already been discussed under hadith number (97).
