Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3972

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about "al-shaf'" (the even) and "al-watr" (the odd), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is meant is the prayer, some of whose (rak'ahs) are even and some odd."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "da'if" because the narrator from Imran bin Husayn is unnamed ("mubham"); he is a shaykh from the people of Basrah. He is not Imran bin Isam, as occurred here with the author (al-Hakim) and in Ibn Abi Hatim's Tafsir (as in "Tafsir Ibn Kathir" 8/415) in the hadith of Yazid bin Harun from Hammam.
Reference / Source: For Ahmad narrated it (33/19919) from Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi, (19935) from Bahz bin Asad, and (19973) from Yazid bin Harun, Affan bin Muslim and Abd al-Samad bin Abd al-Warith; and al-Tirmidhi (3342) via Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi and Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi. All six of them narrate it from Hammam bin Yahya al-Awdhi, from Qatadah, from Imran bin Isam, from "a shaykh from the people of Basrah", from Imran bin Husayn.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir said: "Imran bin Isam al-Dubay'i is alone in narrating it … and in my view its being mawquf on Imran bin Husayn is more likely; and Allah knows best."
