Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3971

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning the saying of Allah Almighty "By the dawn" [Surah al-Fajr: 1], that he said: What is meant is the dawn of the day; and concerning "and by the ten nights" [Surah al-Fajr: 2] he said: What is meant is the (first) ten nights of Dhu al-Hijjah.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it; and the Abu Nasr in its chain is in fact al-Aswad bin Hilal.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts it is "Sufyan 'an al-Agharr bin Khalifah 'an Husayn bin 'Uqbah". This is how al-Hakim's narration reads, as shown by the fact that al-Bayhaqi narrated it from him in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (3469) and "Fada'il al-Awqat" (168) in this form. It is an old "error", for there is no narrator named "al-Agharr bin Khalifah" who narrates from Husayn bin Uqbah. The correct form is what occurs in the printed edition: "al-Agharr 'an Khalifah bin Husayn bin Qays"; and al-Agharr is "Ibn al-Sabbah al-Minqari".

Grading: There is no harm in the narrators of this chain, except that Abu Nasr (al-Asadi) is not known to have heard from Ibn Abbas, as al-Bukhari said in the Book of Marriage of his "Sahih" after hadith (5105). Sufyan is "al-Thawri".
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Bayhaqi from Abu Abdullah al-Hakim with this chain, as already mentioned.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Tabari in his Tafsir (30/168, 169) via Mihran al-Razi, from Sufyan al-Thawri, likewise.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is what the author (al-Hakim) said, but none of those who wrote biographies of Abu Nasr agreed with him on it, for he is known only by his kunyah. Al-Aswad bin Hilal is a different person whose kunyah is "Abu Sallam"; he is one of the senior Tabi'in who lived in the days of Jahiliyyah, and the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhari and Muslim) narrated from him.
