It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have been commanded to fight the people until they say 'La ilaha illa Allah' (There is no god but Allah). When they say it, they will have protected their blood and their wealth from me, except by its right, and their reckoning is with Allah." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited these verses: "You are not a controller over them, except whoever turns away and disbelieves, then Allah will punish him with the greatest punishment." [Surah al-Ghashiyah: 22-24]
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it with this addition.

Explanation & Benefits

2/ 372. Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts and in the sources of takhrij it is with "sin", and this is the reading of Hisham bin Ammar, Qunbul, Ibn Dhakwan, and Hafs (in one of the two ways from him). The reading of the majority is with "sad" (bi-musaytir). Its explicit mention with sad has already passed with the author (al-Hakim) in the narration of Abu Nu'aym and Qabisah from Sufyan under number (3044). See "al-Nashr fi al-Qira'at al-'Ashr" (2/378) and "al-Kashf 'an Wujuh al-Qira'at al-Sab'" (2/372).
Grading: Its chain is "sahih"; Sufyan is "al-Thawri". Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ahmad (22/14209), Muslim (21/35), al-Tirmidhi (3341) and al-Nasa'i (11606) through various routes from Sufyan al-Thawri, with this chain. So al-Hakim's including it in al-Mustadrak is an oversight (dhuhul) on his part. Reference / Source: It was narrated without the recitation by Ahmad (22/14141) via Ibn Jurayj, from Abu al-Zubayr, that he heard Jabir bin Abdullah say … and he mentioned it. Likewise it was narrated without the recitation by Ahmad (14560) via Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqil, and by Muslim (21/35), Ibn Majah (3928) and al-Nasa'i (3425) via Abu Sufyan; both of them from Jabir.
