Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3969

It is narrated from Abu Imran al-Jawni (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by the place of worship of a Christian monk and called out to him: O monk! O monk! The monk looked out (at him), and on seeing him Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) began to weep. It was said to him: O Commander of the Believers, what about his condition makes you weep? He said: I remembered this saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, in His Book: "Labouring and exhausted, they will enter a scorching Fire; they will be given drink from a boiling spring." [Surah al-Ghashiyah: 3-5] This is what made me weep.
This is an anecdote of that time, because Abu Imran al-Jawni did not reach the era of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "da'if" because of the weakness of al-Khadir bin Aban. There is also weakness in Sayyar bin Hatim, but he is taken into consideration (for corroboration), and both of them have been corroborated. The narration of Abu Imran al-Jawni (Abd al-Malik bin Habib) from Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) is "munqati'", since he did not live in his time.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Hafiz Abu Bakr al-Barqani (as in "Tafsir Ibn Kathir" 8/406-407) via Harun bin Abdullah al-Hammal, from Sayyar bin Hatim, with this chain.
