Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3964

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite in the first rak'ah of Witr "Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High", in the second "Say: O disbelievers", and in the third "Say: He is Allah, the One", "Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak" and "Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind".
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it in this way; Imam Bukhari alone recorded it from Ibn Abi Maryam, and this addition is known only from the narration of Yahya bin Ayyub. It has also been narrated through another sahih chain.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "hasan" because of Yahya bin Ayyub (al-Ghafiqi) and Yahya bin Uthman bin Salih (who is saduq, hasan al-hadith), and he has been corroborated in the earlier narrations numbered (1146) and (1157). See also the next two hadiths.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is an oversight (dhuhul) on the part of al-Hakim (may Allah have mercy on him), for al-Bukhari did not narrate this hadith, neither via Ibn Abi Maryam nor via anyone else.

Reference / Source: Rather, also from the hadith of others: as will come later with the author (al-Hakim), the hadith of Khusayf from Abd al-Aziz bin Jurayj from Aishah; and the hadith of Sulayman bin Hassan from Haywah bin Shurayh from Ayyash al-Qitbani from Yazid bin Ruman from Urwah from Aishah, which is in Muhammad bin Nasr al-Marwazi's "Qiyam al-Layl" (as in Ibn Hajar's "Nata'ij al-Afkar" 1/514). About Sulayman bin Hassan, Abu Hatim said: He is sound in hadith (sahih al-hadith); and al-Uqayli wrote his biography in "al-Du'afa'", cited this hadith of his, and said: He is not corroborated in his hadith.
