Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3959

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning the saying of Allah Almighty "And by the witness and what is witnessed" [Surah al-Buruj: 3] (Ali bin Zayd narrated it as marfu', while Yunus narrated it as mawquf), that he said: "Shahid" (the witness) is the Day of Arafah and the day of Jumu'ah, and "mashhud" (what is witnessed) is that promised Day (of Resurrection).
This hadith of Shu'bah from Yunus bin Ubayd is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Via Yunus bin Ubayd its chain is "sahih", and it is "mawquf". Via Ali bin Zayd (Ibn Jud'an), however, it is "da'if" because of his weakness.
Reference / Source: This hadith is in "Musnad Ahmad" (13/7972) with this chain, but with the wording: "The witness (al-shahid) is the Day of Arafah, and the promised day is the Day of Resurrection." This is more "sahih" than what is in the narration of Abu Bakr bin Ishaq.
Grading: More authentic than both is what Ahmad (7973) narrated from Muhammad bin Ja'far, from Shu'bah, from Yunus bin Ubayd alone, from Ammar the client of Banu Hashim, from Abu Hurayrah, that he said about this verse: "The witness (al-shahid) is Friday, the witnessed (al-mashhud) is the Day of Arafah, and the promised (al-maw'ud) is the Day of Resurrection." Through this narration Imam Ahmad distinguished the wording of Yunus bin Ubayd from the wording of Ali bin Zayd.
Reference / Source: Similar to it is what Musa bin Ubaydah al-Rabadhi narrated (in al-Tirmidhi 3339) from Ayyub bin Khalid, from Abdullah bin Rafi', from Abu Hurayrah as "marfu'" (attributed to the Prophet).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its attribution to the Prophet is not sound, because Musa bin Ubaydah is weak and there is softness (lin) in Ayyub bin Khalid.
