It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning the saying of Allah Almighty "When the sky is split open, and listens to its Lord and is obliged to do so" [Surah al-Inshiqaq: 1-2], that he said: "Adhinat" means that it heard (the command of its Lord) and obeyed; and "And when the earth is stretched out" [Surah al-Inshiqaq: 3] means the Day of Resurrection (when the earth will be spread out); and concerning "and casts out what is within it and becomes empty" [Surah al-Inshiqaq: 4] he said: (That is, the earth) will bring out all the dead that are within it.

Grading: Its narrators are thiqah, except for Abd al-Rahman bin al-Hasan, the shaykh of the author (al-Hakim), in whom there is "weakness"; but he is the narrator of the "Tafsir of Adam bin Abi Iyas". It is in the printed "Tafsir of Adam" (2/741), in the narration of Ibn Shadhan from Abd al-Rahman bin al-Hasan al-Qadi, as the tafsir of Mujahid, without mention of Ibn Abbas. Reference / Source: Likewise al-Tabari narrated it in his Tafsir (30/113) via al-Hasan bin Musa al-Ashyab, from Warqa' al-Yashkuri. Reference / Source: It is also with him (al-Tabari) via Isa bin Maymun, from Abdullah bin Abi Najih, from Mujahid. Reference / Source: He also narrated, in the tafsir of ﴿وَأَذِنَتْ﴾ [and it listens], with the chain of the Awfis from Ibn Abbas, that he said: "It (the sky) listened to its Lord."
