Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3950

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) that in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) a beggar stood up and asked (for something), and the people remained silent. Then a man gave him something, and the rest of the people also began giving to him. Thereupon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever initiates a good practice and it is followed, for him is his own reward and the like of the rewards of all those who follow him, without anything being reduced from their rewards; and whoever initiates an evil practice and it is followed, upon him is his own sin and the like of the sins of all those who follow him, without anything being reduced from their sins." The narrator said that Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) then recited this verse: "Every soul will know what it has sent forth and what it has left behind." [Surah al-Infitar: 5]
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it with this wording; rather, they agreed only on the narration of Jarir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that contains the words: "Whoever initiates a (good) practice in Islam."

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (authentic due to supporting reports), and its chain is "hasan" because of Abu Ubaydah bin Hudhayfah. Abu al-Muwajjih is "Muhammad bin Amr al-Fazari", Abdan is "Abdullah bin Uthman al-Marwazi", and Abdullah is "Ibn al-Mubarak".
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ahmad (38/23289) from Wahb bin Jarir, from Hisham bin Hassan, with this chain, and he did not mention the recitation in it.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Supporting reports (shahid) for it are the hadiths of Jarir bin Abdullah al-Bajali and Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with them) in Muslim (2674/15, 16).

Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is an oversight (dhuhul) on the part of the author (al-Hakim) (may Allah have mercy on him), for the hadith of Jarir was narrated by Muslim, not al-Bukhari.
