Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3942

It is narrated from the Mother of the Believers Sayyidah Sawdah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "People will be raised (on the Day of Resurrection) barefoot, naked and uncircumcised; the sweat will reach their mouths like a bridle and will reach the lobes of their ears." Sayyidah Sawdah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, how shameful! Will we look at one another? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "At that time people will be heedless of that (looking) and preoccupied (with their own concern)." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited these verses: "On the Day a man will flee from his brother, and his mother and his father, and his wife and his sons. Every man among them that Day will have a matter enough to occupy him (from others)." [Surah Abasa: 34-37]
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but they did not record it with this wording; rather, the two Shaykhs agreed on recording it in abridged form through the narration of Hatim bin Abi Saghirah from Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her).

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: Its chain is "layyin" (soft, mildly weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Isma'il bin Abi Uways is saduq (truthful), but he erred in some hadiths he narrated from memory, as al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "al-Taqrib", and perhaps this hadith is one of them, for what is "mahfuz" (preserved) in this story is the hadith of Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) which the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhari and Muslim) narrated, as will be pointed out later with the author (al-Hakim). Muhammad bin Abi Ayyash is in fact "Muhammad bin Abi Musa" (he is also called Ibn Abi Ayyash), as in al-Bukhari's "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (7/426), Ibn Abi Hatim's "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" (8/84) and Ibn Hibban's "al-Thiqat" (7/426), and he is "majhul al-hal" (of unknown condition).
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Wahidi in "al-Tafsir al-Wasit" (4/425) from al-Hasan bin Ali al-Wa'iz, from al-Hakim Muhammad bin Abdullah, with this chain.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Abi Asim in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (3066), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (24/91), and al-Tha'labi in his Tafsir (10/135), and via him al-Baghawi in his Tafsir (8/340), through various routes from Isma'il bin Abi Uways, likewise. Al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir declared this chain "jayyid" (good) in "al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah" (19/374)!
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abd al-Hamid bin Sulayman (one of the weak narrators) went against this and narrated it in similar form from Muhammad bin Abi Musa, from Ata' bin Yasar, from Umm Salamah (not Sawdah). It was narrated by al-Bukhari in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (1/237), Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "al-Ahwal" (233) and in "al-Qubur" (70), and al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (833).

Reference / Source: It is in al-Bukhari (6527) and Muslim (2859/56), and the recitation is not in it. See "Musnad Ahmad" (40/24265).
Reference / Source: It will come with the author (al-Hakim) under number (8898) in similar form, with mention of the verse, from the hadith of al-Zuhri from Urwah bin al-Zubayr from Aishah.
