Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3937

أخبرنا عبد الرحمن بن الحسن القاضي، حدَّثنا إبراهيم بن الحسين، حدَّثنا آدم بن أبي إياس، حدَّثنا وَرْقاءُ، عن ابن أبي نَجِيحٍ، عن مجاهدٍ، عن ابن عبَّاس: ﴿وَالنَّازِعَاتِ غَرْقًا (1) وَالنَّاشِطَاتِ نَشْطًا﴾، قال: الموتُ (2). صحيح على شرط الشيخين، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning the saying of Allah Almighty "By those who pull out violently, and by those who draw out gently" [Surah al-Nazi'at: 1-2], that he said: (What is meant by them are the angels of) death.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

(2) صحيح عن مجاهدٍ من قوله، وهذا إسناد رجاله ثقات غير عبد الرحمن بن الحسن القاضي شيخ المصنف ففيه ضعف. إبراهيم بن الحسين: هو ابن ديزيل، وورقاء: هو ابن عمر اليشكري، وابن أبي نجيح: هو عبد الله.
Grading: This is "sahih" as a saying of Mujahid (mawquf). The narrators of this chain are thiqah (trustworthy), except for Abd al-Rahman bin al-Hasan al-Qadi, the shaykh of the author (al-Hakim), in whom there is "weakness". Ibrahim bin al-Husayn is "Ibn Dizil", Warqa' is "Ibn Umar al-Yashkuri", and Ibn Abi Najih is "Abdullah".
وأخرجه وكيع في "الزهد" (43)، والطبري في "تفسيره" 30/ 27، وأبوالشيخ في "العظمة" (462) من طريق سفيان الثوري، عن عبد الله بن أبي نجيح، عن مجاهدٍ، لم يذكر فيه ابن عبَّاس. وإسناده صحيح.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Waki' in "al-Zuhd" (43), al-Tabari in his Tafsir (30/27), and Abu al-Shaykh in "al-'Azamah" (462) via Sufyan al-Thawri, from Abdullah bin Abi Najih, from Mujahid, without mentioning Ibn Abbas in it. Its chain is "sahih".
