It is narrated from Sa'id bin Jubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) concerning the saying of Allah Almighty: "A questioner asked about a punishment bound to happen" [Al-Ma'arij: 1], that he said: It refers to a punishment that will certainly happen. And in "to the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer, from Allah, Owner of the ways of ascent (al-ma'arij)" [Al-Ma'arij: 2-3], by "al-ma'arij" is meant Allah, the Owner of lofty ranks. He further said that by "a questioner asked" is meant al-Nadr bin al-Harith bin Kaladah, who said (in defiance): "O Allah, if this (religion) is the truth from You, then rain down upon us stones from the sky."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its narrators are "thiqah", except that 'Ubayd Allah bin Musa has been "contradicted" in narrating from Sufyan: Abu Usamah Hammad bin Usamah narrated it from him (in al-Nasa'i 11556) and inserted "al-Minhal bin 'Amr" between al-A'mash and Sa'id bin Jubayr, made it a narration of Sa'id bin Jubayr from Ibn 'Abbas, and narrated it in abridged form, without the words: "O Allah, if this is …" etc. Reference / Source: Sa'id bin Mansur narrated it in his Tafsir (990) similar to the narration of the author (al-Hakim), and likewise al-Tabari (9/232), by way of Abu Bishr Ja'far bin Abi Wahshiyyah, from Sa'id bin Jubayr. (2796). Reference / Source: Al-Tabari narrated from several of the Tabi'un that this verse was revealed about "al-Nadr bin al-Harith". Technical note / Defect ('illah): Anas bin Malik, however, differed from them and mentioned that the one who said: "O Allah, if this is the truth …" etc., was "Abu Jahl". Al-Bukhari (4648) and Muslim (2796) narrated this.
