Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3877

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When I was taken on the Night Journey, a pleasant fragrance passed by me. I asked: What is this fragrance? The angels said: This is the fragrance of the hairdresser ("mashitah") of Pharaoh's daughter and her children. (The story is that) she was combing her hair when the comb fell from her hand, and she said: 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah). Pharaoh's daughter asked: Do you mean my father? She said: No, rather Allah is my Lord, your Lord and your father's Lord. The daughter said: Shall I tell my father of this? She said: Yes. So she told him. Pharaoh summoned her and her children. She said (to Pharaoh): I have one request of you. He asked: What is it? She said: That you gather my bones and the bones of my children in one place and bury them. Pharaoh said: That is your right upon us. Then her children were brought and thrown in (into the cauldron of oil) one by one, until only her last child remained, who was still a nursing infant. That child spoke out: O mother, be patient, for you are indeed upon the truth. Then she too was thrown in along with her child." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Four children spoke in infancy: this child, the witness of Yusuf (peace be upon him), the infant in the story of Jurayj (the worshipper), and Isa son of Maryam (peace be upon him)."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "sahih".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Regarding the words at the end of this hadith, "Four spoke …", the "mahfuz" (preserved) view is that it is the statement of Ibn Abbas (mawquf); Affan went against the others by reporting it as marfu'. And although Ata' bin al-Sa'ib suffered ikhtilat, according to the preponderant view Hammad bin Salamah heard from him before his ikhtilat, and it has also been said that he heard from him both before and after it.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (5/2822) recorded it from Affan bin Muslim with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ahmad also recorded it in (2821) from Abu Umar al-Darir and in (2823) from Hasan bin Musa al-Ashyab, which is also (2824); Ibn Hibban (2904) via Hudbah bin Khalid; and Ibn Hibban (2903) via Yazid bin Harun. All four narrate it from Hammad bin Salamah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Umar al-Darir and Hudbah bin Khalid kept the statement "Four spoke …" as mawquf on Ibn Abbas, while Hasan al-Ashyab and Yazid bin Harun did not mention it at all in their narrations.
