Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3873

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Sincere repentance wipes out every sin, and this is in the Qur'an." Then he recited this verse: "O you who believe, turn to Allah in sincere repentance; perhaps your Lord will remove from you your misdeeds." [Al-Tahrim: 8]
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its narrators are thiqah, but there is an error (wahm) in the chain. Muhammad bin Abi Umar al-Adani (or someone below him) erred in narrating it from Sufyan bin Uyaynah, making it "Abayah al-Asadi from Ibn Mas'ud". Yet Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak in "al-Zuhd" (913), Ishaq bin Isma'il al-Taliqani (in al-Dinawari's "al-Mujalasah" 2863, 3134) and Abu Ghassan al-Nahdi (in al-Lalaka'i's "Usul al-I'tiqad" 1951) contradicted him. All three narrated it from Sufyan bin Uyaynah, from Umar bin Sa'id al-Thawri, from his father, as the statement of "Abayah bin Rifa'ah" himself, and did not mention the verse in it.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abayah bin Rifa'ah is actually "Ibn Rafi' bin Khadij al-Ansari al-Zuraqi", not "al-Asadi", and he is a thiqah Tabi'i. Abayah al-Asadi, on the other hand, is "Ibn Rib'i"; he narrated from Ali, Ibn Abbas and others, and a group of the people of Kufah narrated from him. Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat", and Abu Hatim al-Razi said (in "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" 7/29): "He was one of the old-line Shi'ah, and he is a shaykh".
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (6741) from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain.
