It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that this verse, "Indeed, among your wives and your children are enemies to you, so beware of them" [Al-Taghabun: 14], was revealed concerning some people of Makkah who had accepted Islam, but their wives and children had prevented them from coming (emigrating) to Madinah. Then when they (somehow) reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and saw that the others had acquired a deep understanding of the religion, they resolved to punish their families (who had stood in their way). Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "And if you pardon, overlook and forgive (then Allah too is Forgiving)." [Al-Taghabun: 14]
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In manuscript (Z) this has been corrupted into "Yahya".
Note / Clarification: In our manuscripts this word is written "fa-ataw" (without the ya'), whereas what is correct, if Allah wills, is what we have established (in the text), and with it the sentence reads properly.
Note / Clarification: (Its explanation is that) when they saw that the people who had emigrated to Madinah before them had gained understanding of the religion, they resolved to punish their wives and children who had earlier prevented them from emigrating.
Grading: Its chain is "hasan" because of Simak, who is "Ibn Harb". Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ishaq bin Ibrahim is "Ibn Rahawayh", and Amr bin Muhammad is "al-Anqazi". Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (3317) recorded it via Muhammad bin Yusuf al-Firyabi, from Isra'il, with this same chain, and said: This hadith is "hasan sahih".
