أخبرنا الحسن بن يعقوب العَدْل، حدثنا يحيى بن أبي طالب، أخبرنا عبد الوهاب بن عطاء، أخبرنا داود بن أبي هند. وحدثني عليُّ بن عيسى - واللفظُ له - حدثنا الحسين بن محمد القَبّاني، حدثنا أبو هشام الرِّفاعي، حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن محمد المُحارِبي، عن داود بن أبي هند، عن عِكْرمة، عن ابن عبَّاس قال: مرَّ أبو جهل بالنبي ﷺ وهو يصلِّي، فقال: ألم أنهَكَ عن أن تصلِّيَ يا محمد، لقد علمتَ ما بها أحدٌ أكثرَ ناديًا مني، فانتهَرَه النبيُّ ﷺ، فقال جبريل ﵇: ﴿فَلْيَدْعُ نَادِيَهُ (17) سَنَدْعُ الزَّبَانِيَةَ (18)﴾ [العلق: 17، 18]؛ والله لو دعا ناديَه لأَخذَتْه زَبَانيةُ العذاب (1). صحيح الإسناد.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Abu Jahl passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was praying, and said: O Muhammad, did I not forbid you from praying? You know that in this valley (Makkah) no one has a bigger assembly ("nadi") and more supporters than I. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) rebuked him, and Jibril (peace be upon him) came with these verses: "Then let him call his assembly (of supporters); We will call the angels of punishment." [Surah al-Alaq: 17-18] By Allah, had he called his assembly, the angels of punishment would have seized him (at that very moment).

(1) حديث صحيح، وإسناد الحسن بن يعقوب قوي، وأما إسناد علي بن عيسى الحيري ففيه أبو هشام الرفاعي - وهو محمد بن يزيد العجلي - وليس بالقوي، وهو متابَع.
Grading: This hadith is "sahih".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The chain of al-Hasan bin Ya'qub is strong (qawi), whereas the chain of Ali bin Isa al-Hiri contains Abu Hisham al-Rifa'i (who is Muhammad bin Yazid al-Ijli), who is not strong, but he has been corroborated.
وأخرجه أحمد 4 / (2321) و 5 / (3044)، والترمذي (3349)، والنسائي (11620) من طريقين آخرين عن داود بن أبي هند، بهذا الإسناد. والقائل: والله لو دعا ناديه - كما وقع عندهم - هو ابن عبَّاس.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (4/2321, 5/3044), al-Tirmidhi (3349) and al-Nasa'i (11620) recorded it via two other routes from Dawud bin Abi Hind with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: The one who said, "By Allah, had he called his associates" (as it occurs in their narrations), is Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him).
وقال الترمذي: حديث حسن صحيح.
Grading: Imam al-Tirmidhi said: This hadith is "hasan sahih".
وأخرج نحوه أحمد 4/ (2225) و 5/ (3483)، والبخاري (4958)، والترمذي (3348)، والنسائي (10995) و (11621) من طريق عبد الكريم الجزري، عن عكرمة، عن ابن عبَّاس قال: قال أبو جهل: لئن رأيت محمدًا يصلي عند الكعبة لأطأنَّ على عنقه، فبلغ النبيَّ ﷺ فقال: "لو فعله لأخذته الملائكة". وانظر ما سيأتي برقم (5500).
Reference / Source: A similar narration was reported by Imam Ahmad (4/2225, 5/3483), al-Bukhari (4958), al-Tirmidhi (3348) and al-Nasa'i (10995, 11621) via Abd al-Karim al-Jazari, from Ikrimah, from Ibn Abbas.
Details of the narration: In it, Abu Jahl said: If I see Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) praying at the Ka'bah, I will trample on his neck. This reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: "Had he done it, the angels would have seized him". For further detail, see number (5500) below.
قلنا: وحق هذا الحديث أن يخرجه المصنف في تفسير سورة العلق.
Note / Clarification: We say: This hadith properly deserved to be recorded by the author (al-Hakim) in the Tafsir of Surat al-Alaq.
