Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3826

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr and Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection I will be the first person to be given permission to prostrate, and I will be the first person to be given permission to raise his head. So I will raise my head and look in front of me and recognise my Ummah among all the nations, and I will look to my right and my left and recognise my Ummah among all the nations." A man said: O Messenger of Allah, how will you recognise your Ummah among the many nations from Sayyiduna Nuh (peace be upon him) up to your Ummah? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They will have shining faces and radiant limbs from the traces of ablution, and this feature will belong to no other nation besides them. I will also recognise them in that they will be given their records of deeds in their right hands; I will recognise them by their marks on their faces from the traces of prostration; and I will recognise them by their light which will be (running) before them, on their right and on their left."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Grading: With this wording (siyaq) the hadith is "gharib". Al-Mundhiri said: it is "hasan" in corroborating chains (mutaba'at).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Yazid bin Abi Habib used to commit tadlis, and he did not hear this from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Jubayr; between them is the link of "Sa'd bin Mas'ud al-Tujibi al-Misri" (as will come). Sa'd was a righteous man with understanding of the religion, but no musnad narration of his other than this hadith is known, and no one other than Ibn Hibban declared him thiqah, so his status in narration is unknown.
Note / Clarification: As for 'Abd al-Rahman bin Jubayr, our strong assumption is that he is "the Egyptian mu'adhdhin" (the mawla of Nafi' bin 'Amr), not "'Abd al-Rahman bin Jubayr bin Nufayr" (as the name is written here). For Ibn Nufayr is Syrian and the Egyptians do not narrate from him; moreover, he was young and did not meet Abu Dharr or Abu al-Darda' (he narrates from them through his father). Whereas 'Abd al-Rahman al-Misri met them and took part in the conquest of Egypt, and it is from him that the Egyptians narrate. Both are thiqah.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (2490) by way of Abu 'Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain.
Reference / Source: 'Abd Allah bin Lahi'ah narrated it from Yazid bin Abi Habib, but there is disagreement over it from him. Ibn al-Mubarak (in his "Musnad" (103) and in "al-Zuhd" in the recension of Nu'aym bin Hammad (376), and by way of him Ahmad (36/ 21739), al-Marwazi in "Ta'zim Qadr al-Salah" (261) and Ibn 'Abd al-Barr in "al-Tamhid" (20/ 261)), Hasan al-Ashyab (Ahmad 21737), Yahya bin Ishaq (Ahmad 21738) and Qutaybah bin Sa'id (Ahmad 21740, and Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "al-Ahwal" (177)) narrated it from Ibn Lahi'ah, from Yazid, from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Jubayr, from Abu Dharr and Abu al-Darda', without mentioning Sa'd bin Mas'ud, and most of them also did not give the lineage "Ibn Nufayr".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although Ibn Lahi'ah is sayyi' al-hifz, the narration of Ibn al-Mubarak and Qutaybah from him is of good quality (jayyid).
Reference / Source: 'Abd Allah bin Yusuf al-Tinnisi narrated it in al-Tabarani's "al-Awsat" (3234) from Ibn Lahi'ah, from Yazid, from Sa'd bin Mas'ud, from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Jubayr bin Nufayr, from his father, from Abu al-Darda'.
Grading: This narration is "munkar"; the one narrating from 'Abd Allah bin Yusuf, Bakr bin Sahl al-Dimyati, is weak.
Reference / Source: Abu al-Aswad al-Nadr bin 'Abd al-Jabbar narrated it in al-Bazzar's "Musnad" (4132) from Ibn Lahi'ah, from Yazid, from Sa'd bin Mas'ud, from 'Abd Allah bin Jubayr, from Abu al-Darda'.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Bazzar said: Sa'd bin Mas'ud is not well known, and we do not know 'Abd Allah bin Jubayr in transmission.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: "'Abd Allah bin Wahb" corroborated Ibn Lahi'ah in mentioning Sa'd bin Mas'ud (Ibn Abi Hatim, cited in Ibn Kathir: 8/ 41); he narrated it from Yazid, from Sa'd, from 'Abd al-Rahman, from Abu al-Darda' and Abu Dharr.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The prostration of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the Day of Resurrection is supported by the hadiths of Abu Hurayrah (Ahmad: 15/ 9623) and Anas (Ahmad: 19/ 12153); both are in the story of the intercession and are found in the two Sahihs.
Important point: His (peace and blessings be upon him) saying that "(my Ummah's) hands, feet and foreheads will be shining from the traces of wudu', and this honour will belong to no other nation besides them" is supported by the narration of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: This narration is in Sahih Muslim (246), Sunan Ibn Majah (4282) and elsewhere. See also the narration of 'Abd Allah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) in Musnad Ahmad 6/ (3820).
Note / Clarification: As for the rest of the hadith, its meanings are found in several verses of the Noble Qur'an.
