Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3816

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, concerning the saying of Allah Almighty: "As if they were rubies and coral" [Surah al-Rahman: 58]: "(The man of Paradise) will see his face in the cheek of the houri more clearly than in a mirror; the least pearl upon her will light up everything between the east and the west; and upon her will be seventy garments, through which he (the man of Paradise) will be able to see even the marrow of her shin."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: Manuscript (Z) has "al-Husayn", which is wrong. With the author (al-Hakim) the name is written "Abu 'Ali al-Hasan bin Muhammad al-Misri al-Hafiz"; we did not find a biography of him under this name. Most likely he is "al-Hasan bin 'Ali bin Dawud Abu 'Ali al-Mutarriz al-Misri", since it is he who narrates from 'Allan bin Ahmad. The author narrated from this al-Mutarriz in two other places in the book, one of them at number (3636), which has the same meaning with the same chain, except that there al-Mutarriz's shaykh is "al-'Abbas bin Muhammad bin al-'Abbas". See al-Mutarriz's biography in "Tarikh Baghdad" (8/ 390) and "Tarikh al-Islam" (8/ 333, 411).

Grading: This chain is "da'if", because the narration of Abu al-Samh Darraj from Abu al-Haytham Sulayman bin 'Amr al-'Utwari is weak; al-Dhahabi declared it defective for this reason in the Talkhis and wrote: "Darraj is a narrator of oddities."
Note / Clarification: 'Allan is a nickname (laqab); his name is 'Ali.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (7397) narrated it by way of Harmalah bin Yahya from Ibn Wahb with this same chain; it is longer than the text here, and it does not contain the recitation.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (18/ 11715) narrated it similarly by way of 'Abd Allah bin Lahi'ah from Darraj Abu al-Samh. See the earlier number (3636).
Reference / Source: The last part of the hadith - that she will be wearing seventy garments... - was narrated by Ahmad (17/ 11126) and al-Tirmidhi (2522, 2535) by two routes from 'Atiyyah bin Sa'd al-'Awfi, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri.
Grading: 'Atiyyah al-'Awfi is "da'if", though al-Tirmidhi called his hadith "hasan".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported by the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (Ahmad: 14/ 8542): "On each one will be seventy garments, and the marrow of her shin will be seen from behind the flesh." Its narrators are thiqah.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: In the hadith of Abu Hurayrah in al-Bukhari (3245 etc.) and Muslim (2834) the wording is: "Each of them will have two wives; because of their beauty the marrow of their shins will be seen from behind the flesh." It does not mention the garments (hulal).
