Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3803

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the people of Makkah asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for a sign (miracle), so the moon split in Makkah twice, and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: "The Hour has drawn near and the moon has split" [Surah al-Qamar: 1].
The two Shaykhs agreed upon the hadith of Shu'bah from Qatadah that the moon split in the era of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), but they did not record it with the wording of Ma'mar's hadith, although it is sahih (authentic) on the condition of them both.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "sahih". It is in "Musnad Ahmad" (20/ 12668).
Reference / Source: By way of 'Abd al-Razzaq, Muslim (2808) (46), al-Tirmidhi (3286) and al-Nasa'i (11490) narrated it.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (20/ 13154, 21/ 13303, 13918, 13919 and 13958), al-Bukhari (3637, 3868, 4867 and 4868) and Muslim (2802) narrated it through routes from Qatadah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Some narrators from Qatadah report "marratayn" (twice) and some do not, and some say "shiqqatayn or firqatayn" (two pieces); Imam al-Bukhari chose this (two pieces), and, if Allah wills, it is correct. Some scholars have judged "marratayn" (twice) to be a mistake. See: "Fath al-Bari" (11/ 346).
