It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "The Hour has drawn near and the moon has split" [Surah al-Qamar: 1], that he said: This event took place in the blessed era of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): the moon split into two pieces, one piece appearing on this side of the mountain and the other piece behind the mountain. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah, bear witness."

Grading: Its chain is "sahih", but it is the hadith of Mujahid from 'Abd Allah bin 'Umar. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibrahim bin Marzuq made a mistake in naming the Companion; despite being thiqah he sometimes erred and would not retract (as al-Daraqutni said). Other students of Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi (such as Yunus bin Habib, in "Musnad al-Tayalisi" (2003)) contradicted him and gave it as the hadith of Ibn 'Umar (which is the usual, well-trodden route (al-jaddah)). Likewise, other students of Shu'bah also narrated it from Ibn 'Umar. Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (2182, 3288) narrated it from Mahmud bin Ghaylan from Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi. Reference / Source: Muslim (2801) and Ibn Hibban (6496) narrated it through routes from Shu'bah.
