Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3788

أخبرنا أبو زكريا العَنبَري، حَدَّثَنَا محمد بن عبد السلام، حَدَّثَنَا إسحاق، أخبرنا يحيى بن آدم، أخبرنا إسرائيل، عن أبي إسحاق، عن عبد الرحمن بن يزيد، عن عبد الله في قوله ﷿: ﴿مَا كَذَبَ الْفُؤَادُ مَا رَأَى﴾ [النجم: 11]، قال: رأى رسولُ الله ﷺ جبريل في حُلَّةِ رَفْرفٍ قد مَلأَ ما بين السماءِ والأرض (1). صحيح على شرط الشيخين، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "The heart did not lie about what it saw" [Surah al-Najm: 11], that he said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw Jibril (peace be upon him) in a robe of fine green silk (rafraf), and he had filled the space between the heaven and the earth."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

(1) إسناده صحيح. إسحاق: هو ابن راهويه، وأبو إسحاق: هو عمرو بن عبد الله السبيعي، وعبد الله: هو ابن مسعود.
Grading: Its chain is "sahih". Ishaq is Ibn Rahawayh, Abu Ishaq is Amr bin Abd Allah al-Sabi'i, and Abd Allah is Ibn Mas'ud.
وأخرجه أحمد 6/ (3740) و 7 / (3971) عن يحيى بن آدم، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (6/ 3740, 7/ 3971) recorded it from Yahya bin Adam with this same chain.
وأخرجه الترمذي (3283)، والنسائي (11467)، وابن حبان (59) من طرق عن إسرائيل بن يونس، به - إلّا أنه وقع في رواية ابن حبان: حلة من ياقوت.
Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (3283), al-Nasa'i (11467) and Ibn Hibban (59) recorded it via routes from Isra'il bin Yunus. In the narration of Ibn Hibban the words are "a garment of rubies" (hullah min yaqut).
وأخرجه النسائي (11477) من طريق شريك بن عبد الله النخعي، عن أبي إسحاق، به.
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (11477) recorded it via Sharik bin Abd Allah al-Nakha'i, from Abu Ishaq.
وأخرج أحمد 7/ (4289)، والبخاري (3233) و (4858) وغيرهما من حديث الأعمش في قوله تعالى: ﴿لَقَدْ رَأَى مِنْ آيَاتِ رَبِّهِ الكُبْرَى﴾ [النجم: 18] عن إبراهيم النخعي، عن علقمة، عن عبد الله بن مسعود قال: رأى النَّبِيّ ﷺ رفرفًا أخضر من الجنة قد سدَّ الأُفق.
Reference / Source: Ahmad, al-Bukhari (3233, 4858) and others recorded from al-A'mash, from Ibrahim al-Nakha'i, from Alqamah, from Ibn Mas'ud, in explanation of the verse ﴿لَقَدْ رَأَى مِنْ آيَاتِ رَبِّهِ الكُبْرَى﴾ [He certainly saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord]: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a green rafraf from Paradise that had filled the horizon."
والرفرف: ما كان من الثياب من الديباج وغيره رقيقًا حسن الصنعة.
Note / Clarification: "Al-rafraf": fine, finely made cloth of silk brocade and the like.
