Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3770

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Qutbah bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reciting Surah Qaf in the morning (Fajr) prayer. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) reached this verse, "And tall palm trees having fruit arranged in layers" [Surah Qaf: 10], Qutbah said: I asked: "What is meant by their being basiqat (tall)?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It means their length (and height)."
Imam Muslim narrated this hadith with a different wording and did not mention in it the explanation of the word basiqat, and it is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim.

Grading: This hadith is "sahih" apart from the explanation of "busuq" in it and its being made marfu'.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This (addition) is one of the errors of al-Mas'udi (Abd al-Rahman bin Abd Allah bin Utbah), because his memory had become confused (ikhtilat), and Hashim bin al-Qasim heard from him after his confusion. Al-Bazzar in his "Musnad" (after no. 3705) counted it among the errors of al-Mas'udi.
Reference / Source: Al-Bazzar (3704) recorded it via Abu al-Mundhir (Isma'il bin Umar al-Wasiti), from al-Mas'udi, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi (1352) recorded it from al-Mas'udi, but at its end he said: "I said to myself: What is its busuq?" and he did not mention its explanation.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Khaythamah recorded it in his "Tarikh" (2096, 3685) via Abu Nu'aym, from al-Mas'udi. Abu Nu'aym (al-Fadl bin Dukayn) heard from al-Mas'udi before his confusion.
Reference / Source: Its first part (without the question about busuq) was recorded by Ahmad (31/ 18903), Muslim (457), Ibn Majah (836), al-Tirmidhi (306), al-Nasa'i and Ibn Hibban via routes from Ziyad bin Ilaqah.
