Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3763

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked: "O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about the deeds we do: is it a matter that has already been decided (in destiny), or something we are beginning anew?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Every person is enabled to do that for which he was created." Then Yunus bin Maysarah (may Allah have mercy on him) turned to Sa'id bin Abd al-Aziz and said to him: "The confirmation of this hadith is in the Book of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic." Sa'id asked: "O Ibn Halbas, where is it?" He said: "Do you not hear this saying of Allah: 'And know that among you is the Messenger of Allah. If he were to obey you in much of the matter, you would be in difficulty; but Allah has made faith beloved to you and adorned it in your hearts, and has made disbelief, wickedness and disobedience hateful to you. Those are the rightly guided, as a bounty from Allah and a favour' [Surah al-Hujurat: 7-8]." Then Yunus said: "O Sa'id, what do you think: if these people had been left to themselves, as these wicked people (the deniers of destiny) claim, in which direction would they have gone? Towards that which was made beloved and adorned for them (faith), or towards that which was made hateful to them (disbelief and disobedience)?"
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "hasan" because of Sulayman bin Utbah. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar called it hasan in "al-Fath" (21/ 39), and its marfu' part is "sahih" due to its supporting reports. Abu Idris al-Khawlani is A'idh Allah bin Abd Allah.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "al-Qada' wa al-Qadar" (39) through Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Firyabi recorded it at length in "al-Qadar" (38) through Sulayman bin Abd al-Rahman al-Dimashqi.
Reference / Source: Ahmad recorded its first, marfu' part in his "Musnad" (45/ 27487) through Haytham bin Kharijah, from Abu al-Rabi' Sulayman bin Utbah.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported by the hadith of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) which is in "the two Sahihs" and in Ahmad (2/ 621).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And another hadith from Abd Allah bin Mas'ud in Ahmad (6/ 3553). See the rest of its supporting reports there.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Dhahabi objected, saying that Ibn Ma'in said of Sulayman bin Utbah: "He is nothing." He confined himself to the statement of Ibn Ma'in alone, although the people of al-Sham (Sulayman's own land) declared him trustworthy, among them Duhaym Abd al-Rahman bin Ibrahim, Abu Mushir and Hisham bin Ammar. Abu Hatim al-Razi said: There is no harm in him, and he is well regarded (mahmud) among the people of Damascus.
