It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when this verse was revealed, "Indeed, those who lower their voices in the presence of the Messenger of Allah" [Surah al-Hujurat: 3], Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, by the One who revealed the Book to you, from now on I will speak to you only as one who whispers a most confidential secret, until I meet Allah, the Mighty and Majestic."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: It is "da'if" because of its idtirab (inconsistency). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Muhammad bin Amr (Ibn Alqamah al-Laythi), although saduq and hasan in hadith, Technical note / Defect ('illah): there has been disagreement over him on whether this hadith is connected or mursal. Sa'id bin Amir is al-Duba'i. Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "al-Madkhal ila al-Sunan" (653) through Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain as connected (mawsul). Technical note / Defect ('illah): The trustworthy narrator Abbad bin al-Awwam contradicted this; he narrated it from Muhammad bin Amr, from Abu Salamah as "mursal" and did not mention Abu Hurayrah. Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (1431) and Ibn Abd al-Barr in "Bayan al-Ilm" (2371) from Abbad via two routes that strengthen each other. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Then Yazid bin Harun (who is thiqah) contradicted both Sa'id and Abbad; in Ibn Abi Shaybah (13/ 261) he narrated it from Muhammad bin Amr, from Muhammad bin Ibrahim al-Taymi, also as "mursal". Note / Clarification: It will come as a hadith of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) himself at no. (4498), but its chain is "very weak". Important point: More sahih than that is that after the revelation of this verse it was Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) who used to speak to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) like one sharing a secret, as Abd Allah bin al-Zubayr narrated from him (Ahmad: 26/ 16133, al-Bukhari: 7302). Indeed, in the narration of Ibn al-Zubayr there is also the phrase: "He did not mention that about his father (meaning Abu Bakr)." Note / Clarification: This phrase seems to be from Ibn Abi Mulaykah (the narrator from Ibn al-Zubayr); Abu Bakr al-Siddiq was his maternal grandfather, so he called him "father", which is common usage among the Arabs. Note / Clarification: However, nothing prevents both al-Siddiq and al-Faruq from having spoken to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) after that like one sharing a secret, since both of them showed the utmost courtesy and the loftiest character towards the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). May Allah be pleased with them both. Note / Clarification: "Ka-akhi al-sirar" means: like one who whispers. "Al-sirar" means secret speech, that is, like one speaking confidentially whose voice can barely be heard.
