Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3755

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: When we returned from Hudaybiyah, the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) were overcome with grief and sadness, because (the terms of the treaty had seemingly been agreed from a position of weakness, and) they had slaughtered their sacrificial animals in the very place (where they were). Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A verse has been revealed to me that is dearer to me than the whole world." He (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated this three times. We said: "O Messenger of Allah, what is it?" So he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited: "Indeed, We have granted you a clear victory, that Allah may forgive you your past and future shortcomings, complete His favour upon you and guide you to a straight path" [Surah al-Fath: 1-2], to the end of the two verses. We said: "O Messenger of Allah, congratulations to you, but what is there for us?" So he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "That He may admit the believing men and the believing women into gardens beneath which rivers flow, to abide therein forever, and remove from them their misdeeds; and that is, in the sight of Allah, a great success" [Surah al-Fath: 5]. Then when we reached Khaybar and its people saw the khamis, that is, the army, of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), they turned their backs and fled to their fortresses. At this the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Khaybar is ruined! Indeed, when we descend upon the courtyard of a people, evil is the morning of those who were warned."

Grading: This hadith is "sahih", but this chain is "da'if" because of al-Hakam bin Abd al-Malik (al-Dhahabi declared it defective for this reason).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hakam was alone in combining the stories of al-Hudaybiyah and Khaybar in a single report, although each of them is corroborated separately.
Details of the narration: For the story of al-Hudaybiyah in the first part, Hammam al-Awdhi and others corroborated him from Qatadah. See its tracing in the previous hadith.
Details of the narration: For the story of Khaybar in the second part, Ma'mar from Qatadah (Ahmad: 20/ 12671) and Shu'bah from Qatadah (Muslim: 1801) corroborated him.
Reference / Source: The story of Khaybar was narrated at length by Abd al-Aziz bin Suhayb from Anas in Ahmad (19/ 11992), al-Bukhari (371), Muslim (1427) and others.
