Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3754

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said concerning this saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, "Indeed, We have granted you a clear victory" [Surah al-Fath: 1], that what is meant by it is "the conquest of Khaybar." And when this verse was revealed, "That Allah may forgive you your past and future shortcomings" [Surah al-Fath: 2], the Companions said: "O Messenger of Allah, congratulations to you (this is a favour for you)." Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "That He may admit the believing men and the believing women into gardens beneath which rivers flow" [Surah al-Fath: 5].
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it with this wording; Imam Muslim, however, recorded only this much: that what is meant by "Indeed, We have granted you a clear victory" is the conquest of Khaybar.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is "sahih" with the mention of al-Hudaybiyah, and this chain is "strong" because of Harami bin Umarah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, he erred in mentioning "the conquest of Khaybar", whereas all the other narrators contradicted him and stated that this event took place at "al-Hudaybiyah".
Reference / Source: A group narrated it from Shu'bah in this way, among them: Hajjaj bin Muhammad (Ahmad: 20/ 12779), Uthman bin Umar (al-Bukhari: 4172), Muhammad bin Ja'far Ghundar (al-Bukhari: 4834), Yahya al-Qattan (al-Nasa'i: 11434) and Khalid bin al-Harith (al-Nasa'i: 11438). All five narrated it from Shu'bah with this same chain and mentioned "al-Hudaybiyah" in place of Khaybar, and this is what is mahfuz (preserved).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Hajjaj and Uthman bin Umar made clear that the first part of the hadith (﴿إِنَّا فَتَحْنَا لَكَ فَتْحًا مُبِينًا﴾ [Indeed, We have given you a clear conquest]) is from Qatadah from Anas, while the second part ("Congratulations to you") is from Qatadah from Ikrimah as mursal.
Reference / Source: Ahmad, Muslim (1786), al-Tirmidhi (3263) and Ibn Hibban recorded it via various routes from Qatadah, from Anas, and all of them mentioned "al-Hudaybiyah".
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (371) also recorded it via al-Hasan al-Basri, from Anas.

Important point: This is an oversight (error) of the author (al-Hakim), for as far as we have found it is not recorded through this route by Muslim or anyone else, and only Harami bin Umarah mentioned Khaybar. Abu Musa is Muhammad bin al-Muthanna al-Zamin, and his shaykh Muhammad is Ibn Ja'far Ghundar.

Note / Clarification: It is like this in the existing manuscripts of "al-Mustadrak", but our strong assumption is that it is a slip of the pen by the author or by copyists, since what is mentioned in the report is al-Hudaybiyah and Khaybar.
