It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: A group of jinn came down to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was reciting the Qur'an at Batn Nakhlah. When they heard the recitation, they said: "Be silent," and they told one another to keep quiet. They were nine jinn, one of whom was named Zawba'ah. Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "And (remember) when We directed to you a group of the jinn, listening to the Qur'an; and when they attended it, they said: Be silent" up to "manifest error" [Surah al-Ahqaf: 29 - 32].
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is "hasan", but what is mahfuz (preserved) is that it is a statement of Zirr bin Hubaysh, not narrated from Abd Allah bin Mas'ud. There has been disagreement over it from Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri, as will come. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sufyan is al-Thawri, and Asim is Ibn Abi al-Najud, who is saduq and hasan in hadith. Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (2/ 228) through Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain. Note / Clarification: In its printed edition it reads "they were seven" (wa kanu sab'ah)! Reference / Source: Al-Bazzar (1846) recorded it from Ahmad bin Ishaq al-Ahwazi, and al-Daraqutni in "al-Ilal" (5/ 55) via Ahmad bin Mani', both from Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri, and in both of them "seven" is also mentioned! Reference / Source: Muhammad bin Bashshar narrated it in al-Tabari's "Tafsir" (26/ 31) and Amr bin Ali al-Fallas in al-Daraqutni's "al-Ilal" (5/ 55), from Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri, but neither of them mentioned Abd Allah bin Mas'ud in it, and this is what is mahfuz. Reference / Source: It was narrated from Zirr bin Hubaysh as his own statement by Yahya al-Qattan in al-Tabari (26/ 31), and by Waki' and Yahya bin Yaman in Abu Nu'aym's "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (253); all three narrate it from Sufyan al-Thawri, from Asim, from Zirr, and in all of them the number is "nine" (tis'ah).
