Imam Sufyan bin Uyaynah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the people of the Jahiliyyah used to say that it is time that destroys us, it is time that causes us to die and gives us life, so Allah Almighty refuted this saying of theirs. Accordingly, Imam al-Zuhri narrated, via Sa'id bin al-Musayyab, from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: The son of Adam hurts Me; he reviles time, whereas I am time (its Creator and Master). It is I who turn over its night and its day, and when I will, I fold them both up." And Sufyan recited this verse: "There is nothing but our life of this world; we die and we live, and nothing destroys us except time." [al-Jathiyah: 24]
The two Shaykhs agreed on recording this hadith of Imam al-Zuhri in a wording other than this one, and it is sahih (authentic) on the condition of both of them.
