It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man among the Arabs would worship a stone, and when he found a better stone than it, he would throw away the first and take up the second (as his object of worship). So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "Have you seen the one who has taken his own desire as his god?" [al-Jathiyah: 23]
This hadith is sahih (authentic) in its chain of narration, and the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "sahih", although a mistake (wahm) has occurred in it in Ja'far's lineage; the correct one is "Ja'far bin Abi al-Mughirah", not "Ja'far bin Iyas". Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason is that Mutarrif (Ibn Tarif al-Harithi) is known only for narrating from Ja'far bin Abi al-Mughirah. Ja'far bin Abi al-Mughirah is a thiqah narrator. Likewise Ja'far bin Iyas (Ibn Abi Wahshiyyah) is also thiqah and well known for narrating from Sa'id bin Jubayr; indeed he is better known. Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Nasa'i (11421) via Musa bin A'yan, from Mutarrif, from Ja'far (without his lineage), from Sa'id bin Jubayr.
