Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3728

It is narrated from Tawus that he said: A man came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) and asked him: From what was creation created? He replied: From water, light, darkness, wind and earth. The man asked: Then from what were these things created? He said: I do not know. Then that man went to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) and asked him the same question, and he too gave the same answer. Then the man came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and asked: From what was creation created? He said: From water, light, darkness, wind and earth. The man asked: Then from what were these things created? So Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) recited this verse: "And He has subjected to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, all of it from Him." [Surah al-Jathiyah: 13] At this the man said: No one could have informed us of this (point of knowledge) except a man from the household of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) in its chain of narration, and the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "sahih". Ishaq is Ibn Rahawayh.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): As for al-Dhahabi's statement in "al-Talkhis": "I searched for this Umar (Ibn Habib) and could not identify him, and the report is munkar!", that is his statement, whereas this Umar is well known among the thiqah hafiz narrators. See "Tahdhib al-Kamal" (21/ 288-289).
Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Bayhaqi in "al-Asma' wa al-Sifat" (829) and "al-I'tiqad" (p. 92-93) via Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim, with this chain.
Note / Clarification: It is also in "Tafsir Abd al-Razzaq" (2/ 213), but the name "Tawus" has dropped out of the printed edition, which has turned it into a report told by Humayd al-A'raj.
Reference / Source: Something similar was narrated by al-Dulabi in "al-Kuna wa al-Asma'" (after 633) via Abu Nasr, from al-Firyabi, from al-Thawri, from al-A'mash, from al-Minhal, from Abu Arak, that a man asked Abd Allah bin Amr... Yahya bin Ma'in said: al-Firyabi did not narrate a hadith stranger than this; it is the strangest of his narrations.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We say: we have not been able to identify this "Abu Arak".
Note / Clarification: Al-Bayhaqi said, explaining Ibn Abbas's citing of the verse as evidence: His meaning is that the source of everything is from Him (Allah), that is, from His creating, originating and inventing. He created water first (or water and whatever He willed), without any prior origin or precedent, and then made it the origin of the rest of creation. He is the Originator and the Maker; there is no god besides Him and no creator other than Him.
