It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Every servant will be raised (on the Day of Resurrection) in the state in which he died." Imam Sufyan al-Thawri mentioned this hadith in the explanation of this saying of Allah Almighty: "Or do those who have committed evil deeds think that We will make them like those who believed and did righteous deeds, equal in their life and their death? How evil is the judgement they make!" [Surah al-Jathiyah: 21]

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this is distorted into "حسان". Ibn Hibban here is the famous Imam, the author of "Sahih Ibn Hibban".

Grading: This hadith is "sahih", and this chain is "qawi" (strong) because of Abu Sufyan (Talhah bin Nafi').
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Khalifah is al-Fadl bin al-Hubab al-Jumahi, and Abu Amir al-Aqadi is Abd al-Malik bin Amr.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ahmad (22/ 14543) from Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri, and by Muslim (2878) via Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi, both from Sufyan al-Thawri, with this chain (without the recitation).
Reference / Source: It was also narrated from Sufyan by Abu Hudhayfah al-Nahdi in "Tafsir Sufyan" (285), who added at its end: "(meaning that) the believer (is left) upon his faith and the disbeliever upon his disbelief".
