Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3670

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: We used to say that there is no repentance for one who has fallen into trial (and abandoned the faith), and that Allah will not accept anything from him. But when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Madinah, this verse was revealed concerning them: "Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful" [Surah al-Zumar: 53], and the verses after it as well. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I wrote these verses, mounted my camel and went around Madinah (reciting them to the people). Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained in Makkah, waiting for Allah Almighty to grant him and his Muhajir companions permission to emigrate, while Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) remained waiting for permission to be given to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) so that he could set out with him.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is how it occurs with the author (al-Hakim), and it is an "error". What is correct (sawab) is what is in all the other narrations from Ibn Ishaq: that Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote it and sent it to Hisham bin al-As, who was in Makkah and had stayed behind from the migration. Hisham said: When it reached me, I went out to Dhu Tuwa and began turning it over (reflecting on it) so that I could understand it, and I said: O Allah! Make me understand it. Then I recognised that it had been revealed about us (and then I migrated and joined the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)).
