Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3659

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Abu Talib fell ill, and the people of Quraysh came (to visit him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also came, and at Abu Talib's head there was room for one man to sit. Abu Jahl (hurriedly) sat there so as to prevent him (peace and blessings be upon him) from sitting there. Then they complained to Abu Talib about him (peace and blessings be upon him). Abu Talib said: "O my nephew, what do you want from your people?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O uncle, I want from them only one word by which the Arabs will submit to them and the non-Arabs will pay them the jizyah." They asked: "Only one word?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, only one word." They asked: "What is it?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "'La ilaha illallah' (There is no god but Allah)." The narrator said: Upon this they began to say: Has he made all the gods into a single god? This is indeed a strange thing! And these verses were revealed concerning them: from "Sad. By the Qur'an, full of reminder" up to this saying: "This is nothing but a fabrication." [Surah Sad: 1-7]
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading

Grading: It could possibly be graded "hasan" (tahsin) because of the narration after it. This chain is "da'if" (weak); Ibn Abi Darim and Muhammad bin Uthman bin Abi Shaybah have been "criticised" (though they are corroborated).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): No one narrated from Yahya bin Imarah (al-Kufi) except al-A'mash (Ata' narrated from him in an inconsistent chain), and no one but Ibn Hibban declared him reliable, so he is "unknown" (jahalah).
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Tirmidhi (3232) from Mahmud bin Ghaylan and Abd bin Humayd, from Abu Ahmad (Muhammad bin Abd Allah al-Asadi), with this chain. Abd bin Humayd said "Yahya bin Abbad". al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan sahih".
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ahmad (3/ 2008), al-Tirmidhi, al-Nasa'i and Ibn Hibban through several routes via Sufyan al-Thawri.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ahmad (5/ 3419) and al-Nasa'i (11373) via Abu Usamah, from al-A'mash. He named al-A'mash's shaykh "Abbad bin Ja'far" (which is one of the variants in the name of Yahya bin Imarah).
