It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "And indeed, among his party was Ibrahim (peace be upon him)" [Surah al-Saffat: 83] means that he was upon the way and the practice (sunnah) of Sayyiduna Nuh (peace be upon him); "he reached the age of striving with him" [Surah al-Saffat: 102] means that he grew up until his exertion in deeds became like that of Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him); "when they had both submitted" means when they both carried out what they had been commanded; and "he laid him down on his forehead" [Surah al-Saffat: 103] means that he turned his face towards the ground. At that point the son said: "Do not slaughter me while you are looking at me, for perhaps you will feel mercy for me and not be able to complete the slaughter. Tie my hands to my neck and place my face towards the ground." Then, when he drew the knife to slaughter him, it had no effect, until a call came: "O Ibrahim, you have fulfilled the vision" [Surah al-Saffat: 104-105]. So he withheld his hand and lifted him up. "And We ransomed him with a great (accepted) ram." [Surah al-Saffat: 107] Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) held that the one to be sacrificed was Sayyiduna Isma'il (peace be upon him).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "hasan" because of "Abu Hudhayfah" (Musa bin Mas'ud al-Nahdi). Reference / Source: It was recorded by Adam bin Abi Iyas in his "Tafsir" (2/ 542-545) from Warqa' al-Yashkuri, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, as his own "statement" (maqtu'), without mentioning Ibn Abbas. It is the same in al-Tabari. Note / Clarification: Its last part will come later at number (4078) via al-Sha'bi from Ibn Abbas.
