Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3646

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Banu Salimah lived on one edge of Madinah, and they intended to move near the Mosque (of the Prophet). So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "Indeed, it is We who give life to the dead, and We record what they have sent ahead and their footprints." [Surah Ya Sin: 12] So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called them and said: "Your footprints (as you come to the mosque) are recorded." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse to them, so they abandoned (their intention to move).
This is a sahih and unusual hadith from the narration of Imam al-Thawri, and Imam Muslim has recorded part of this meaning from the hadith of Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him).

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The manuscripts have "Sa'd bin Tarif", which is a plain error. This is Abu Sufyan, about whose name there is disagreement (Tarif bin Shihab, Tarif bin Sa'd, or Ibn Sufyan). Here we have recorded what appears in al-Hakim's own narration as recorded from him by al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (2630).

Grading: Its chain is "da'if" (weak). No biography of Ja'far bin Muhammad was found. Abu Sufyan Tarif was declared weak by the majority; however, he is not alone in narrating it from Abu Nadrah (al-Mundhir bin Malik), as Sa'id bin Iyas al-Jurayri corroborated him.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But there is disagreement over al-Jurayri, and what is "mahfuz" (preserved) is that it is from Abu Nadrah from Jabir bin Abd Allah (without mention of the verse), and this is what is correct. And Allah knows best.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Tirmidhi (3226) from Muhammad bin al-Wazir al-Wasiti, from Ishaq bin Yusuf al-Azraq, with this chain up to Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, and he called it "hasan gharib".
Reference / Source: Likewise it was narrated from Sufyan al-Thawri by Abd al-Razzaq (al-Musannaf 1982) and Ibn al-Mubarak (al-Tabari 22/ 154), from Tarif, from Abu Nadrah, from Abu Sa'id.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Tarif was corroborated by "Sa'id bin Iyas al-Jurayri"; al-Bazzar (as cited by Ibn Kathir 6/ 553) recorded it via Uthman bin Umar from Shu'bah and via Muhammad bin al-Muthanna from Abd al-A'la, from al-Jurayri.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir says: There is "strangeness" (gharabah) in it regarding the mention of the revelation of this verse (the occasion of revelation), since this surah is entirely Makkan. And Allah knows best.
Grading: We say: al-Jurayri (although he suffered from confusion in later life) - the narration of Shu'bah and Abd al-A'la from him is from before his confusion. However, "Abd al-A'la" is not of the highest rank of reliability, and others contradicted him. As for "Shu'bah", the route to him is not that strong; it contains al-Bazzar's shaykh "Abbad bin Ziyad al-Saji", who is saduq (truthful) but some criticised him. And he was also contradicted in this hadith of Shu'bah: a group of thiqah narrators narrated it from Shu'bah (Ahmad 23/ 14992 and 15194, Abu Ya'la 2157, Abu Awanah 1148) as "al-Jurayri from Abu Nadrah from Jabir", marfu', but without "mention of the verse".
Important point: And this is what is "mahfuz" (preserved), and it is "sahih".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Shu'bah was corroborated in the hadith of Jabir by "Abd al-Warith bin Sa'id" (Ahmad, Muslim) and "Ibn al-Mubarak" (Ibn Hibban); both narrated it as "al-Jurayri from Abu Nadrah from Jabir".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It was also narrated by Kahmas bin al-Hasan in Muslim (665-281) as "from Abu Nadrah from Jabir".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A supporting report (shahid) for it is the narration of Abu al-Zubayr from Jabir, found in Ahmad (22/ 14611) and Muslim (664).

Note / Clarification: This is an "oversight" (dhuhul) by the author (al-Hakim) (may Allah have mercy on him), because through this route it was narrated by al-Bukhari (655, 656, 1887); Muslim did not record any narration of this meaning from Anas.
