It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying concerning this saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "Among them is one who wrongs himself, among them is one who is moderate, and among them is one who is foremost in good deeds" [Surah Fatir: 32]: "The one foremost in good deeds (sabiq) and the moderate one (muqtasid) will enter Paradise without reckoning, while the one who wrongs himself (zalim li-nafsihi) will be given an easy reckoning, and then he too will enter Paradise." There is a difference among the narrations from Imam al-A'mash regarding the chain of this hadith: Imam al-Thawri narrated it from al-A'mash, through Abu Thabit, from Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him); according to one statement, al-Thawri narrated it from al-A'mash, from Abu Thabit, from Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him); and according to another statement, Imam Shu'bah narrated it from al-A'mash, from a man of the tribe of Thaqif, from Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him). And when the narrations of a hadith are this numerous, it becomes clear that the hadith has an authentic basis.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This chain is da'if because al-A'mash's teacher is unnamed. Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is also inconsistency (idtirab) in it, as the author will indicate (and as we explained in the commentary on "Musnad Ahmad"). Ahmad (36/ 21697, 45/ 27505) recorded it from Waki', from Sufyan al-Thawri, from al-A'mash, from "Thabit or Abu Thabit", from Abu al-Darda'. This Thabit or Abu Thabit is unknown. Reference / Source: Ahmad (36/ 21727) also recorded something similar by another weak route.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This (principle) applies when the sources (makharij) are multiple and of equal standing. But this hadith has a single source, "al-A'mash", and there is disagreement over it from him, so this is evidence of inconsistency and weakness.
