Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3627

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that a man asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about "Saba'", what it is: a man, a woman or a land? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He was a man to whom ten sons were born; six of them went to Yemen and four went to Syria. Among the Yemeni tribes are Madhhij, Kindah, Azd, the Ash'aris, Anmar and Himyar (which is the best of them all), and among the Syrian tribes are Lakhm, Judham, Amilah and Ghassan." This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The hadith is hasan li-ghayrihi (sound due to supporting reports), and this chain has some softness (lin).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): A narrator below Abd Allah bin Yazid al-Muqri' erred in naming his teacher, calling him "Abd Allah bin Ayyash", and this Abd Allah is not that strong and is only taken into account in corroborating chains and supporting reports. But the preserved version is that it is al-Muqri''s narration from "Abd Allah bin Lahi'ah", and this hadith is known only through him. Although Ibn Lahi'ah is criticised for poor memory, the narration of Abd Allah bin Yazid al-Muqri' from him is sound (salih). Ahmad narrated it correctly from al-Muqri' in his "Musnad" (5/ 2898) and "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (1616), saying: from Abd Allah bin Lahi'ah, from Abd Allah bin Hubayrah, with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Furthermore, Abd Allah bin Yazid al-Muqri' was contradicted in the name of the narrator from Ibn Abbas. Abd Allah bin Wahb (one of the most reliable of people regarding Ibn Lahi'ah) narrated it in his "Jami'" (21), and via him Ibn Adi in "al-Kamil" (4/ 152); Abu Amr Uthman bin Sa'id bin Kathir in Ibn Abi Khaythamah's "Tarikh", second part (3164); Asad bin Musa in al-Tahawi's "Mushkil al-Athar" (3378); and Amr bin Khalid al-Harrani in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (12992); all four from Ibn Lahi'ah, from Abd Allah bin Hubayrah, from "Alqamah bin Wa'lah al-Saba'i", from Ibn Abbas. We have not found a biography of this Alqamah nor established his condition; perhaps Ibn Lahi'ah erred in naming him, and the correct name is "Abd al-Rahman bin Wa'lah", as in the narration of Abd Allah bin Yazid al-Muqri', for this Abd al-Rahman is the one known for narrating from Ibn Abbas in the six books and elsewhere, and he is thiqah.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported by the hadith of Farwah bin Musayk that follows in the author's work.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Another supporting report is from the hadith of Yazid bin Husayn from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (22/ 639) and Abu Nu'aym's "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (6633). But no Companion named Yazid bin Husayn is known, so apparently it is mursal.
Note / Clarification: The words "wa Himyar khayruha kulluha" are so in our manuscript originals of "al-Mustadrak". Some copies of "Musnad Ahmad" and "Fada'il al-Sahabah" have "ghayra ma kulluha", and other copies of the "Musnad" have "arba' kulluha"! This phrase does not occur in the other narrations.
