Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says concerning this saying of Allah Almighty: "And We made iron soft for him, (saying): Make full coats of mail" that Luqman (the Wise) was present with Dawud (peace be upon him) while he was making a coat of mail, bending and weaving the iron with his hand like this. Luqman was amazed and wanted to ask, but his wisdom prevented him from asking. When he finished it, he put it on and said: This is an excellent coat of mail for battle. Then Luqman said: Silence is part of wisdom, but those who practise it are few. I wanted to ask you, but I remained silent until you explained it yourself. This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih as mawquf, and most likely it is among what was taken from the People of the Book (Isra'iliyyat). Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (4671) from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim, with this same chain. 787. Reference / Source: Al-Khara'iti recorded it in "Makarim al-Akhlaq" (441) via Hajjaj bin Minhal, from Hammad bin Salamah, with this same chain. (Hammad dropped out of its printed edition; he is present in the al-Rushd edition, p. 787.) Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban recorded it in abridged form, with Luqman's saying "Silence is part of wisdom, and few practise it", in "Rawdat al-Uqala'" (p. 41) via Abd al-A'la bin Hammad, from Hammad bin Salamah, with this same chain. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This saying (without mention of Luqman) has also been narrated as marfu' from the hadith of Anas from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): in al-Quda'i's "Musnad al-Shihab" (240) via Qatadah, and in Ibn Adi's "al-Kamil" (5/ 169), and via him al-Bayhaqi in "al-Shu'ab" (4672), via Uthman bin Sa'd al-Katib, both from Anas. Grading: Both chains are da'if. Ibn al-Qattan al-Fasi mentioned the second of them in "Bayan al-Wahm wa al-Iham" (3/ 604) and declared it weak because of Uthman al-Katib. Al-Bayhaqi said: This Uthman bin Sa'd erred in this; the correct version is the narration of Thabit. We say: As for the route of Qatadah, the chain to him has some softness (lin). 3/ 108. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It has also been narrated as marfu' from the hadith of Ibn Umar; Abu Mansur al-Daylami recorded it in "Musnad al-Firdaws", as in the hafiz Ibn Hajar's "al-Ghara'ib al-Multaqatah" (2017). Its chain is da'if, and the hafiz al-Iraqi declared it weak in "Takhrij al-Ihya'" (3/ 108). Note / Clarification: "Al-hukm" means wisdom (hikmah).
