Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3617

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abi Talhah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from his father that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came one day with signs of joy clearly visible on his blessed face. We said: O Messenger of Allah, we see joy on your face. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The angel came to me and said: O Muhammad, your Lord says: Are you not pleased that whoever of your Ummah sends blessings upon you once, I will send ten mercies upon him, and whoever of your Ummah sends salutations of peace upon you once, I will send peace upon him ten times? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Certainly (I am pleased)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: Its chain can possibly be considered hasan.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its narrators are well-known thiqah narrators except "Sulayman, the freedman (mawla) of al-Hasan bin Ali"; according to al-Dhahabi, no one besides Thabit al-Bunani narrated from him. Al-Nasa'i said: This Sulayman is not well known. Al-Bukhari mentioned him in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (4/ 6) and Ibn Abi Hatim in "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" (4/ 152), but neither recorded any criticism or praise of him. Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat" (6/ 385), and mentioned in it (2/ 310) that he was among those killed at Karbala with al-Husayn bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both). This hadith is corroborated.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (26/ 16361) recorded it from Affan, and al-Nasa'i (1207) from Ishaq bin Mansur al-Kawsaj, from Affan, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (16363), al-Nasa'i (1219, 9805) and Ibn Hibban (915) recorded it via several routes from Hammad bin Salamah, with this same chain.
Important point: The report that Allah the Exalted sends blessings ten times upon whoever sends blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) once is sahih. It was narrated by more than one Companion, among them Abu Hurayrah (Ahmad 14/ 8854, Muslim 408 and others), Anas (Ahmad 19/ 11998 and others) and Abd Allah bin Amr (Ahmad 11/ 6568, Muslim 384 and others).

Note / Clarification: This is how it is in (Z), while the remaining manuscripts have "sahih al-isnad".
