It is narrated from Sayyiduna Irbad bin Sariyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "I was the servant of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets even when Adam (peace be upon him) was still kneaded in his clay. And I will tell you about this: (I am) the supplication of my father Ibrahim (peace be upon him), the glad tidings of Isa (peace be upon him), and the dream of my mother which she saw; and the mothers of the prophets see (dreams) likewise." And indeed, the mother of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw, at the time of his birth, a light by which the palaces of Syria were illuminated for her. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "O Prophet, indeed We have sent you as a witness, a bearer of glad tidings and a warner, and as one who invites to Allah by His permission, and as an illuminating lamp." [Surah al-Ahzab: 45-46]
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: Without the mention of the recitation, the hadith is sahih li-ghayrihi (authentic due to supporting reports), and this chain is hasan, Allah willing, as al-Dhahabi said in "Tarikh al-Islam" (1/ 494). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Except that "Bishr bin Sahl al-Labbad" alone, from Abd Allah bin Salih, mentions the recitation at the end of the hadith. A group narrated from Bishr, as appears in the chains, but no criticism or praise of him has been transmitted, so he is majhul al-hal (of unknown condition), though he is taken into account in corroborating chains and supporting reports. But in this hadith he alone mentions the verse, for Ya'qub bin Sufyan and Abu Isma'il al-Tirmidhi (in al-Bayhaqi's "al-Shu'ab" 1322 and "al-Dala'il" 1/ 80) and Bakr bin Sahl (in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" 18/ 629), all three, narrated it from Abd Allah bin Salih without mentioning the recitation at its end. Likewise Ahmad (28/ 17150) recorded it from Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi, and Ibn Hibban (6404) via Abd Allah bin Wahb, both from Mu'awiyah bin Salih, with this same chain. Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi erred and named Abd al-A'la bin Hilal as "Abd Allah bin Hilal", and Abd Allah bin Ahmad drew attention to this after the narration in his father's "Musnad". Note / Clarification: It will come at number (4220) by a weak route from Sa'id bin Suwayd. See its supporting reports there and in the detailed discussion in the commentary on "Musnad Ahmad". Note / Clarification: The words "while my father was lying (munjadil) in his clay" refer to Adam (peace be upon him), as is stated explicitly in the narrations of the hadith. "Munjadil" means cast down upon the ground (al-jadalah), and this was before the soul was breathed into him.
