Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3592

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: It is written in the Torah that Allah Almighty has prepared, for those whose sides forsake their beds (that is, those who pray tahajjud), that which no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and which has never occurred to the heart of any human being, and which no angel brought near knows nor any prophet sent as a messenger. He said: And we read it (in the Qur'an) thus: [Surah al-Sajdah: 17] "So no soul knows what has been kept hidden for them of the comfort of the eyes, as a reward for what they used to do."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy), except that Abu Ubaydah (the son of Abd Allah bin Mas'ud) did not hear from his father.
Note / Clarification: Abu al-Ahwas is Sallam bin Sulaym, and Abu Ishaq is Amr bin Abd Allah al-Sabi'i.
Reference / Source: This report is in "Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah" (13/ 112 and 302).
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari recorded it in his "Tafsir" (21/ 103) from Muhammad bin Ubayd al-Muharibi, from Abu al-Ahwas, with this same chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Abu al-Ahwas was corroborated by Sufyan al-Thawri and Shu'bah, also in al-Tabari (21/ 104).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Isra'il and Qays bin al-Rabi' differed from them (also in al-Tabari) and narrated it as "Abu Ishaq, from Ubaydah bin Rabi'ah, from Abd Allah bin Mas'ud". If what these two narrated is also preserved (mahfuz) from Abu Ishaq (who had grown old and had begun to forget), then it is a connected (muttasil) chain that is hasan because of Ubaydah bin Rabi'ah. He explicitly stated that he heard from Ibn Mas'ud in Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" (8/ 318), where Ibn Sa'd narrated it from al-Fadl bin Dukayn from Isra'il.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Kabir" (9039) from Abd Allah bin Muhammad bin Sa'id bin Abi Maryam, from al-Firyabi, from Qays bin al-Rabi', from Abu Ishaq, from Abu Ubaydah, from Ibn Mas'ud.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Tabarani's teacher "Abd Allah bin Abi Maryam" narrates munkar reports (sahib manakir), especially in what he narrates from al-Firyabi.
